Anton Corbane is a Dutch filmmaker and photographer. He is known as the creator of numerous video clips for famous rock musicians. Most of Corbane's photographs have also been associated with the world of show business. Over the past decade, he has been involved in the filming of several major Hollywood films as a director.
Family and early years
Anton Corbane was born in the Netherlands in 1955. The family had four children. His father served as a priest in a Protestant church, his mother worked as a nurse. Maarten, Anton’s younger brother, also made a career as a photographer and director. Their grandfather was an art teacher. Perhaps the grandchildren inherited from him creative abilities.
Photographer
In the 70s of the last century, Anton Corbane began to take pictures of famous music groups for publication in thematic magazines. His photographs often hit the cover. Corbain moved from the Netherlands to the UK, where he collaborated with the weekly music publication New Musical Express. He gained a reputation as a talented photographer, filming many popular singers and actors. Especially long was the creative union of Corbein and the group U2. He designed the covers of the records of this ensemble and conducted reportage shooting during his world tours.
At an early stage in his career, Corbain preferred to take black and white photographs, but subsequently switched to color photographs using filters.
Producer
In the early 80s, Corbane concentrated his creative powers on working in the music video genre. The greatest number of clips he shot for the group Depeche Mode.
In 2007, Corbane made his debut in a big movie. He became a producer and director of a biographical film about Ian Curtis, the leader of the British rock band Joy Division. The painting, entitled "Control" was based on memoirs written by the widow of the musician. The main role was brilliantly played by the little-known actor Sam Riley, who was nominated for prestigious cinema awards for this film and received special acclaim from critics.
It was decided to make a dramatic film about a talented musician suffering from bouts of epilepsy and difficulties in his personal life in black and white. This idea was put forward by Anton Corbane. The work of the early stage of his career as a photographer was also performed in this style.
"American"
Corbain attracted the attention of Hollywood producers. In 2009, they invited him to take the director’s chair on the set of the American thriller. The lead actor was George Clooney. After the premiere of the film, critics praised his acting. In their opinion, he managed to create on the screen an image of an unusual emotionally impenetrable personality. The artistic merit of the painting as a whole also earned the favor of experts. The film is an intricate espionage story filled with drama and hidden characters. The box office of the picture met the expectations of the creators, which indicates a positive acceptance by its viewers.
"The most dangerous person"
The first successful directing experience in big cinema opened up great opportunities for Corbane. His next Hollywood film was a spy drama based on the novel of the famous British writer John Le Carré. The picture entitled "The Most Dangerous Man" was shot in 2012. The main role in it was played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, for whom this movie work was the last in his life. The image of one of the heroes of the film was embodied on the screen by Russian actor Grigory Dobrygin.
Le Carré’s book takes place in a world of secret services that do not adhere to generally accepted moral standards and do not disdain any means to achieve their goals. The works of this author usually describe the spies of different countries, waging an eternal and hopeless war among themselves. Anton Corbain perfectly recreated the atmosphere of Le Carré's novel in the film and received critics' exceptionally high marks for it.
Life
In 2015, a new biographical picture was released. She talks about the friendship between the legendary actor James Dean and Dennis Stoke, a photographer for Life magazine. Anton Corbane was invited for the third time to work as a director in a Hollywood project. The film "Life" became a commercial failure and received conflicting reviews from moviegoers. Unfortunately, once again filming the story of a cult personality, Corbein was not able to repeat the success of his debut picture "Control".
