In 1898, the Institute was founded. Morozov, who specialized in the treatment of tumors. The professor of the University of Moscow, the famous surgeon L. L. Levshin and his student V. M. The institution was also under the leadership of S. I. Sergeev, B. E. Peterson, P. A. Herzen. The institute was transformed 36 years after its creation. From that moment, he became the Central Research Institute for Tumor Pathologies. It was a subordinate institution of the People's Health of the RSFSR. In the period 1922-1933, the surgeon P.A. Herzen, who was the creator of the school of oncologists in the capital, became the leader. He made a significant contribution to the further formation of the institution. Thanks to this, the organization was named after Herzen. The Institute from 1982 to 2013 was under the supervision of Professor V. I. Chissov. To date, the head of the institution is A. D. Kaprin.
Structural base
Herzen Institute includes three advanced Russian Centers. They are engaged in laser photodynamic diagnosis and treatment of tumors, palliative care, epidemiological studies. The dissertation council specializes in oncology, radiation diagnostics, radiation therapy.

Herzen Institute is a leader in the development of methods for treating tumor patients. To date, the staff consists of an academician and 2 correspondents of the RAMS, 40 doctors, 21 professors and 90 candidates of sciences, 17 of whom are laureates of the State and Government Prizes of the Russian Federation.
