ABC mechanics: brake adjustment on a bicycle

bike brake adjustment
Walking in the fresh air, of course, allows you to relax and gain strength, and if you can ride a bike, you can be sure that it will double the pleasure. In addition, riding this iron "friend" will allow you to gain good physical shape, as well as increase immunity to various types of diseases and get rid of chronic fatigue. But for this vehicle to work flawlessly, you need to know such repair details as replacing a tire, adjusting the brakes on a bicycle, and others. These points are important, but it is not so difficult to implement them, having some skills in working with mechanisms.

Types of brake systems

There are several types of brake systems for bicycles:

  • rim - mechanical (vector, tick, cantilever) and hydraulic;
  • pedal
  • disk - hydraulic, mechanical and combined;
  • roller;
  • drum and stirrups.

Of these, only the first three systems were widely used. It can be noted that the adjustment of the brakes on a bicycle differs from the type used. Consider the most common cases - rim and disc brakes.

Disk systems

The disk-type brake system is a device comprising a rotor made in the form of a steel disk and a caliper. The last device is a tick brake, the pads of which compress the plate. The force from the brake lever passes to this mechanism through a cable (mechanics) or using hydraulics.

Adjusting the brakes on a bike with a disc system can be done as follows:

  1. It is necessary to install the disk on the wheel hub and secure it with bolts with an eccentric.
  2. Attach the adapter and caliper so that the last element does not fit snugly.
  3. By pressing the brake levers, you need to adjust the position of the pads, at which they move at an equal distance.
  4. When the rotor is clamped, the caliper is installed in the correct place automatically, and only after that it is necessary to fix this part with bolts.
  5. Check brake pads for working condition. To do this, scroll the wheel by pressing the system knobs several times (more than 20). In case of friction of the rotor against the block (on the one hand), it is necessary to loosen the caliper mount and shift in the direction of this bar. If this phenomenon is two-sided, here it is necessary to loosen the hexagon on the handle and tighten all the bolts.

Rim systems

hand brake adjustment

Adjusting the brakes on a bike with a rim system includes two steps:

  1. Front device setup.
  2. Adjustment of the rear brake system.

The position of the handles can be debugged according to individual parameters, so that it is convenient when you click on this device. To do this, you need to loosen the screw with which this part is attached to the steering wheel. Then adjust the position of the handle and fix the element.

The hand brake is adjusted so that the pads are located at an equal distance from the rim (about 3 mm). This can be achieved by easing the pressure of the pressure spring from the side of a weaker tension or by strengthening it from the other side.

The rear brakes are adjusted in the same way. Checking and adjusting the operation of this system will increase the life of the bike, as well as protect traffic on this type of transport.
