Plot

The basic theme of this criminal story is a demonstration of the attempts of the majority of prisoners to confront lawlessness towards them from the side of the zone’s authorities, thieves in law and their “sixes”.
The protagonist of this story is Yuri Kolganov, sentenced to 4 years, nicknamed "Kalgan" - a prisoner in a forced labor colony. Caught for disobedience in the pre-trial detention center, he meets the Prince, who performs the function of “looking after the zone”. He understands that Kolganov is an independent and strong person, he can be useful to him. The prince suggests that he become his assistant, whose duties include filling out orders for the implementation of the plan. Returning to his hut, Kalgan finds a dying friend, Tolich, who, before his death, asks Yuri “to remain human and not behave like a greyhound”. Soon Kalgan becomes the so-called "hillock" in this hut.
The film also traces the fates of other heroes: Viktor Moshkin, nicknamed the “Philatelist”, who ended up in a labor camp for fraud with the sale of postage stamps, Lieutenant Kasimov, who sees in prisoners personalities that his bosses absolutely dislike.
