Kratos: mythology of Ancient Greece and the place of this character in it

With a surge of popularity for a series of computer games called God of War, fans became more interested in who the main character was named Kratos. Mythology makes little mention of this, and only certain facts indicate its existence and place among all personalities. This furious warrior was not in vain chosen as the hero of the game, because Zeus himself recognized his fighting character and abilities.

Appearance

At one glance at his enemies, Kratos gives them horror and despair. Mythology tells about how he received a terrible scar on his face. During the confrontation between the titans and the gods, the skull was split with a fragment of a mountain, but he managed to survive.

The divine blacksmith, using special gold plates, fastened his head back to him, so that the warrior would still serve the Pantheon in future battles. In appearance, the hero has furious facial features, a bald skull and dark eyes. Such an image was recreated in the game as described in Aeschylus's poem “Chained Prometheus”. Of course, the developers added a lot of details from themselves, but in general terms the character and image were transferred correctly in the project.

Birth and the first war

It is known that Kratos was born from the union of Pallant and Styx. Ancient Greek mythology says that his father was a younger titan, and this status was inherited. Mother was an oceanian and embodied the image of the most terrible underground river that dead souls crossed on the way to Tartarus. It is because of her that the external features of a warrior look so harsh.

About small years and adolescence in history, no information has been preserved. Around the same period, Zeus was born from the union of Cronus and Gaia. When war broke out between the gods, their titan parents, Kratos also had to choose his side. Mythology says that the fighter joined the thunderer and helped him in every way in an effort to overthrow his father. The older titans were arrogant and feared for their throne even more than later the gods themselves. The war ended with the victory of Zeus, Hades and Poseidon not without the help of other fabulous creatures. Kratos became a faithful ally of the head of the Pantheon and began to serve. Judging by his armament and the prototype of the game, the fighter was sent only for military affairs and the resolution of various kinds of conflicts.

Service at Zeus

Few facts have been preserved about how the service was held with the gods and what Kratos was doing at that time. Mythology has conveyed to our time only two accurate facts. The first is that the fighter was madly in love with the goddess of beauty Aphrodite. Some sources indicate that they had descendants, but this could not be confirmed. The same plot was displayed in the game, where Kratos among the entire Pantheon regretted and did not kill only Aphrodite.

The second fact is more accurate, and Aeschylus wrote about him in the work “Chained Prometheus”. When the titan, who had great love and pity for people, gave them fire, Zeus ordered him to be chained to a rock and left to hang there. Hephaestus forged special rods for this task, and, as the mythology of ancient Greece, Kratos tells, the order should be executed. It was his best warrior that Zeus ordered to follow the punishment of Prometheus and score the rods as tight as possible. Aeschylus did not describe the warrior's speech and his emotions at this moment, and therefore no conclusions can be drawn about the nature of Kratos.

Game plot

The developers of the game God of War in the project created their vision of who Kratos is in Greek mythology and what is his role in all the stories. At first, the warrior was a Spartan commander, seasoned in battle and faithful to his dead brother Deimos. In one of the battles, his army was close to defeat, and then Kratos prayed to the god of war Ares. He heard him, accepted life and soul in exchange for victory and incredible strength.

After that, with the presented blades of Chaos, the fighter more than once sowed devastation throughout the territory of a large country. Once Ares decided to hurt Kratos and forced him to kill his family, including his daughter. After this, the furious Spartan vowed revenge. From that moment began his long journey to Olympus, where he could get even with all the gods. Adventures more than once drove him from his chosen path to the service of Zeus, the salvation of the people of Greece from Morpheus, battles in the underworld and many other battles. In the end, he managed to reach Olympus and accomplished his planned revenge. This huge storyline was described in three parts of a series of games, the developers plan to continue the adventures of Kratos, but in a different setting.
