When is intrauterine insemination used?

According to statistics, every fifth couple cannot have children. And in almost half of these cases, doctors can not establish the reason why there is no natural conception. In this situation, intrauterine insemination will be the best option for conceiving a child.

What is it

Intrauterine Insemination

Intrauterine insemination is artificial insemination, which consists in the introduction of processed and purified sperm into the uterine cavity. This procedure is performed during ovulation.

Kinds

Intrauterine insemination is divided into 2 types. Which one will suit one or another pair will become known only after the spouse has been performed. If the result of this analysis shows that the number of viable sperm is small, then intrauterine insemination with the husband’s sperm is used. It is also performed if the spouse does not have ejaculation or if there is impotence.

If the result of the analysis showed that the husband has genetic problems or there are no sperm, intrauterine insemination with donor sperm is performed .

Insemination Stages

  1. At the first stage, the preparation of the woman’s body is carried out - ultrasound monitoring is performed, which shows the growth of the follicles and the maturation of the egg by stimulating the ovaries with medications that in one way or another affect their function.
  2. The following is the introduction of prepared and purified sperm into the uterus.

Also, intrauterine insemination can be performed in the natural cycle, that is, without the process of stimulating ovarian maturation, but then the probability of successful fertilization decreases significantly.

This procedure is carried out in just 2-3 minutes and is absolutely painless. Since it is performed using a special catheter, the diameter of which moves unhindered along the cervical canal. After insemination, a woman should lie down for at least 30 minutes.

The benefits of insemination

Intrauterine insemination with sperm

  • Ovulation control ensures that the egg and sperm meet at the best time for fertilization.
  • During sexual contact, the bulk of the sperm is delayed and dies in the cervical mucus. Intrauterine insemination simply avoids this.
  • Before the introduction of sperm into the cervical canal, it is processed, and this improves its quality and, accordingly, increases the chances of pregnancy.

Contraindications

  • Pathologies of the development of the uterus, which can interfere with normal gestation.
  • Mental illness of a woman in whom pregnancy is contraindicated.
  • Inflammatory diseases or cancer of the pelvic organs.
  • Ovarian tumor.

As a rule, after 3-4 unsuccessful attempts of insemination, doctors suggest conducting in vitro fertilization. The thing is that in almost 90% of cases, pregnancy should occur in the first 3 attempts. Since with each subsequent insemination, the probability of pregnancy is reduced to almost zero.
