In the Amur Region in the city of Svobodny, 1923, on January 30, a third child was born in the family of a railway worker, Job Gaidai, who was named Leonid. From his father and mother, the boy inherited a light cheerful disposition, which is very useful to him on his chosen life path. Over time, the family moved to the Irkutsk region, where in his youth, Lenya worked at the Satire Theater and participated in performances in the local House of Culture. In 1942 he was drafted into the army and a year later he was seriously injured in his leg. Returning home, he went to study at the drama theater, graduated in 1947. After that, he successfully played in performances for two years, but realized that he wanted to try himself in directing.

In 1949, Gaidai went to Moscow to study as a director. It was there that he met the one who became his wife for life - Nina Grebeshkova. It was she who supported him during periods of creative failure. In the same student years, the filmography of Gaidai began , when he starred as an actor in the film "Liana" (1955). After another three years, the drama "Wind" was released, where Leonid again starred. But after these films, directing became the main field for him, and therefore the acting filmography of Gaidai is rather meager. Leonid began his career as a director in 1955, a year later the film "Long Way" saw the light of day.
