Pavel Chukhrai was born in 1946. He was born in the village of Bykovo, Moscow Region. His father is the famous artist Grigory Chukhrai, who was nominated three times for the "Golden Palm Branch" of the Cannes Film Festival.
His childhood passed in the Kharkov region - with his grandparents on the part of his father. His father in the 50s received a referral to the Dovzhenko Film Studio. The family moved to Kiev, and in 1955 moved to Moscow.
Grigory Chukhrai started at Mosfilm as a lighting engineer and radio installer, while at the same time he studied at an evening school.

The loudest success in the filmography of Pavel Chukhrai was the drama The Thief, which was released in 1997. The picture became one of the most popular in Russia. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. But the award could not be won, the Dutchman Mike van Diem received the statuette for the drama "Character".
The main roles in the film "The Thief" were played by Vladimir Mashkov, Ekaterina Rednikova, Yuri Belyaev. The picture is based on the recollections of the main character, the boy Sani. His father dies shortly after the war from numerous wounds.

Sani's mother suspects that he has an affair with a neighbor. But he finds him searching the things of the residents. He turns out to be a professional thief who is about to urgently leave.
In 2004, Chukhrai directed the drama Driver for Faith, which became one of the triumphs of the Kinotavr festival. The last picture at the moment was the military drama Cold Tango, which was released in 2017.
