When is MRI used?

Magnetic resonance imaging is one of the most effective methods for identifying pathologies in the soft tissues of the body. Thanks to the MRI method, it is possible to examine not only the brain and spinal cord, but also other internal organs. MRI is an order of magnitude higher in quality and accuracy than x-ray examination, ultrasound and computed tomography. The advantage of MRI is that it can detect cancer, neurological diseases and problems with the musculoskeletal system at an early stage. Most often, MRI is used for pathologies of the brain and spine. Thanks to the method, you can fully evaluate the structure of the organ, find pathologies, detect tumors and injuries of any origin and size. MRI is used in such areas of medicine as: urology, oncology, angiology, etc.

MRI diagnostics are carried out in a special device, which not every clinic can afford. Typically, the city has about 2-3 centers with such an apparatus, and prices for MRI diagnostics in St. Petersburg fluctuate within 4000 rubles. To clarify the cost in a particular clinic, it is better to contact the administration directly.

Who is still recommended to have an MRI? Examination of the head is carried out in the postoperative period, with acute cerebrovascular accident, with traumatic brain injuries. Preventive examinations are performed for suspected tumors, for the diagnosis of foci of brain inflammation, for cysts, porencephaly and hygroma, for assessing abnormalities in the development of the brain, after cerebral hemorrhage, after surgery on the brain, pituitary diseases, and dysfunctions in the facial areas skulls, namely the nasopharynx, sinuses, eyeballs and orbits.

Pelvic MRI is performed with suspicion of education in this area, for example, in the uterus, ovaries, prostate gland.

MRI of the spine must be done to examine the muscles, joints and bones of this area. Tomography is performed if there is a suspicion of metastases, tumors of bones, muscles, vertebrae, injuries of vertebral bodies or intervertebral discs. If there is a need to examine the condition of the menisci, ligaments and cartilage, then the attending physician will tell you what to do in this or that case.

Spinal cord MRI is performed if there is a suspicion of foci of inflammation in this area, if there is a suspicion of tumor formation, when evaluating the cerebrospinal fluid, after surgery and when analyzing pathologies of vertebral origin, that is, with injuries or tumor lesions of the spine.

There are not many limitations on MRI. There should be no metal implants in the patient’s body, including a pacemaker. A negative effect on insulin pumps, prostheses, non-ferromagnetic implants, nerve stimulants, pregnancy, etc. has not been proven. In such cases, you should consult your doctor.
