Yuri Sherstnev was born on April 24, 1941 in the Soviet capital of Moscow. After the outbreak of war, the family was evacuated to the distant Uzbek city of Samarkand, where he lived the first year of his life. Mom was engaged in housework and raising a child. Father, Sherstnev Boris Illarionovich, was a professional military man. He fought, died in 1942 in the battles of Stalingrad.
Then mother and little Yura moved to the Udmurt village of Yukamenskoye, where they spent another four war years. They lived hard, like the whole country, but steadily endured all the trials that fell to their lot. A year after the victory over Nazi Germany, they got the opportunity to return to the capital.
