Motion sickness is a fairly common problem. Every person knows the term “motion sickness”, which is accompanied by nausea and dizziness. It is interesting that sea sickness can be encountered when traveling not only on a ship, but also on an airplane, train, car.
Why does motion sickness occur?
The most striking symptomatology appears precisely with sea rolling. The occurrence of discomfort and nausea is associated with the impact on the human vestibular apparatus of angular and rectilinear acceleration. It is worth noting that the emotional state is not the last among the causes of this problem. For example, several hundred years ago it was noted that sailors suffering from seasickness quickly forgot about it during the fighting.
The fact that people staying in the aft compartments suffer such unpleasant symptoms much less often than those that remain in the bow of the ship did not go unnoticed. And stale air, high humidity and room temperature only exacerbate the main symptoms.
Odor can also affect a person’s condition. For example, the smell of varnish, tobacco, smoke, engine oil or food can cause nausea and other symptoms. Eating is affected by well-being. In fact, the opinions of scientists and specialists differ here. Some argue that motion sickness rarely appears on an empty stomach. Others, on the contrary, recommend a light meal before starting the trip. In any case, fatty and sweet foods, as well as alcoholic beverages only exacerbate the problem.
Motion sickness: symptoms
In fact, the symptoms of the disease, as well as the intensity of their manifestation, depend on the individual characteristics of the human body, as well as on transport conditions. In any case, strong weakness first arises. Many people complain of stomach discomfort. One of the most common symptoms is nausea, turning into vomiting. Quite often, people complain of severe headaches.
Motion sickness may be accompanied by other symptoms. For example, some report severe fatigue, fatigue, and emotional stress. The “motion sickness” is often, to one degree or another, associated with some fears and phobias, even if they are not fully realized. Some travelers even begin to experience depression.
Statistics show that only 3% of the world's population are “completely immune” to such a violation. In all the others, seasickness manifests itself at least from time to time and is associated with the influence of the external environment (smells, state of health, nutrition, etc.).
There is another important thing - all of the above symptoms can be associated with diseases of the inner ear or disorders in the functioning of the autonomic nervous system. Therefore, you should still consult a doctor who can make a final diagnosis.
Motion sickness: treatment
Modern medicine offers a lot of drugs and drugs that can protect against motion sickness. There are special pills that significantly relieve symptoms of motion sickness. An interesting fact is that when traveling on a ship (or any other transport) the so-called placebo effect is very strong - it is enough for a person to believe that he took the medicine in order to recover.
There are also special patches for motion sickness. Today, special bracelets have become quite popular, helping to cope with nausea and dizziness. Such devices act on special acupuncture points located on the wrist, thereby normalizing the digestive tract.
It is worth noting that the "treatment" must begin before the start of the trip, as the likelihood of developing symptoms is significantly reduced. Before boarding a vehicle, do not drink plenty of fluids or drink alcohol. Eat exceptionally light foods that are quickly absorbed by the body.
