A script is what serves as the foundation of any movie. But is it worth it so narrowly to understand the meaning of this word? Find out today.
Value
As always, to start a more or less substantive conversation, it’s worthwhile to open an explanatory dictionary and see what is written on this subject. The following values of the object of study are fixed in the indispensable book:
- A literary work with a detailed description of the action on the basis of which a movie is created, as well as a television and radio broadcast. For example: "Stephen King rarely writes scripts for the adaptation of his own books."
- A list of the characters in the play with an indication of the time they went on stage. This is a special term.
- A pre-prepared plan for carrying out something (figurative meaning). For example: "Scenario of a public event."
Naturally, the first and third values are in use, so we will focus on them. By the way, when it comes to the third meaning of the word “script”, this does not always mean only the action plan of a holiday, sometimes a “program malfunction” also occurs in people's personal lives. For example, a husband planned something for the evening: to sit at home, drink some wine, listen to romantic music, especially since it was Friday evening, and his wife took and bought theater tickets for the same reason. Can we say that everything went wrong? It’s easy, because the plan was in the head of a person, even if he didn’t transfer it to paper.
Synonyms
When the word is unknown, then I want to throw a bridge from it to already familiar definitions. Since this is an easy and simple operation, we will do it. So, the list looks like this:
- plan;
- composition;
- forecast;
- scheme.
Only the last two synonyms need clarification. Why is the scenario a forecast? Back to the couple, which was discussed a little higher. After all, when the husband and wife planned to spend the evening in a certain way, they predicted exactly this development of events. But, as they say now, something went wrong. Their expectations, and hence their forecasts, did not coincide.
As for the scheme, one way or another the scenario is only a scheme of the events of the film or personal, public life. Nobody knows how it will actually be. When it comes to a work of art, the actors must fill out their action plan with specific content. That is why reading replicas only pleases aesthetes from cinematography and literature, and movie scripts are published in the latest volumes of collected works of writers. Surely few people get to them from readers. The words “script” have such synonyms.
Intrigue is the hallmark of good films
How can one talk about an object of research and not say good films from this point of view? No way. Therefore, we are waiting for an analysis of why some films are beautiful, while others are not so wonderful.
When a person picks up an adventure book, then, of course, the main thing is intrigue. The same is true in most films. Moreover, it doesn’t matter whether the plot is known or not, only one is of paramount importance: can the work retain the interest of the audience. For example, we’ll write five films that contain some kind of intrigue.
- The Illusion of Deception (2013).
- The Code of the Thief (2009).
- Awakening (1990).
- “Flying Over the Cuckoo's Nest” (1975).
- "Good morning, Vietnam!" (1987).
When it comes to clever scammers, there seems to be no question of why watch. In addition, in such films the ending is usually unpredictable. That is, it is pointless to prove the existence of intrigue in them. Another thing is films with drama elements. What may be the intrigue in the latter? Everything is very simple. The last three films of the list are united by the fact that their characters each in their own way struggle with the system.
In Awakening, Dr. Malcolm Sayer tries to defeat the disease; McMurphy, the protagonist of The Flying Over the Cuckoo's Nest, opposes hospital management. Of course, Ken Kesey, the author of the original text, encoded a metaphysical uprising of the individual against society in this riot, that is, the viewer sees a fight with the authorities of the psychiatric hospital, and understands that this is a battle for freedom. And finally, the resourceful DJ from the fifth on the list of films, Adrian Cronauer, wants to partially change the army. The intrigue in the films is only one: will the heroes be able to celebrate the victory or not. What does the script mean in such masterpieces? A lot, but without acting, it’s nothing.
Stamps and archetypes
Interestingly, the two nouns placed in the subtitle mean the same thing: a repeating action. But for some reason, the cliches cause disgust from the audience, and archetypes - delight and admiration. What is the reason for this injustice in relation to the cliche? Everything is very simple. Archetypes, as defined by K.-G. Jung are the most ancient representations of mankind. Therefore, they can’t get bored, just as their father’s house can’t oppose, for example. We are pleased to fall to the roots and watch fairy tales. It was in the plots of the latter that the prototypes of all scenarios in the world lurked - both human destinies and works of art.
A stamp is an archetype without its antiquity, depth and charm. The myth cannot be bored, but the cliché is bored after two views. For example, Hollywood action movies with Jean-Claude Van Damme. They have one scenario: at first the hero is an outsider, then he practices a lot, then he always loses in the final battle, but when he is about to go to resuscitation, he suddenly rises on moral grounds and wins. Why is it completely impossible to watch, although it seems to be taken as the basis for the archetype of the hero? Because the victory looks strained, unrealistic. We remind you that we are not watching a fairy tale, but a serious action movie.
Another thing - "Pretty Woman", the next incarnation of Cinderella. Despite the scenario that the heroine represents the oldest profession, there is no vulgarity in the picture, everything is cute and fabulous, in order to charm the viewer, the energy of the idea of success is used.
The scenario of human destiny

You can not talk about the meaning of the word "script" and not say about fate. Yes, it would be possible to refer to the books and theoretical constructions of Eric Burn, but we will not do this. More interesting is the assumption of Blaise Pascal expressed by him in his most famous book, Thoughts. A remark of this kind: a person’s fate actually comes down to trifles, a trifle, an accident. Our destiny is a set of coincidences that we can only look back to tie into a harmonious pattern, as Steve Jobs did in his famous speech to Stanford graduates, for example. The deep meaning of the scenario of fate is this: when a person goes forward, he does not see the system in his actions. But if a certain result is obtained, a person looks around and understands: in all his actions there was a meaning that eventually led to the final (or intermediate) point. We ourselves determine the degree of fatefulness of certain events, but this does not mean at all that a predetermined scenario does not exist.
