The story that formed the basis

The real hijacking of the aircraft, which was transferred to the screen by the creators of the film "Hostages" (2017), took place on November 18, 1983. In history, this event remained as a capture and attempt to hijack a Tu-134.

As the investigation later found out, the Georgian priest Teymuraz Chikhladze was the ideological inspirer of the attack. It was he who put into the minds of a group of young people from representatives of the golden youth who attended his church the idea of ​​fleeing to the West. They had a plan according to which Chikhladze himself had to carry weapons and grenades into the plane under a robe. But suddenly he had a chance to go abroad on a religious line, so he began to constantly postpone the date of capture. As a result, the priest was not taken with them on the day of the hijacking.

The terrorist group included 7 people. Joseph Tsereteli became their leader. Most of those who decided on this act were the children of high-ranking officials and leaders, lived in abundance. Some of them have even been abroad on tourist visas and could theoretically emigrate in this way. But criminals were driven by the desire not only to leave the USSR, but also to become famous so that they would be met in the West as ideological fighters against the Soviet regime.

At the film studio Georgia-Film, they managed to watch the educational film Nabat, dedicated to the attempts of conditional terrorists to seize an airplane. First of all, it was intended for employees of Aeroflot, so it went on a wide rental only in the 90s.

Terrorists without inspection carried weapons on board the aircraft, taking advantage of an acquaintance with the duty of the international airport sector. They had two TT pistols, two guns, two hand grenades, which turned out to be training.

Terrorists arrived at Tbilisi airport under the guise of newlyweds and guests who are leaving for Batumi.

Together with them, there were 57 passengers and 7 crew members on board the aircraft. Attackers decided to hijack the plane when it begins to decline for landing in Batumi. This point was as close to the Turkish border as possible. But they did not know that due to bad weather conditions the crew was ordered to return to Tbilisi.

The plane was captured at 16:13. They took the stewardess hostage, opened fire on those who looked like representatives of the special services. Immediately one person was killed, two seriously injured. The hijackers broke into the cockpit and demanded to fly to Turkey.

The crew resisted. In a shootout, the flight engineer Chedia was killed and the inspector Sharbatyan was seriously injured. In response, the navigator Gasoyan managed to kill one terrorist and seriously injure another. The ship's commander injured the Iverieli brothers.

The pilot began abrupt maneuvers in the air to knock down criminals. Using the hitch, the crew was able to close in the cockpit behind an armored door. Desperate terrorists opened fire on passengers, killing another man and injuring five.

At 17:20 the plane landed in Tbilisi. He was immediately cordoned off by the military. During the negotiations, the hijackers demanded refueling and departure to Turkey. Otherwise, they threatened to blow up the plane.

At 06:55 on November 19, the Alpha group’s Special Forces, which specially flew to Tbilisi, launched an assault. The operation lasted 8 minutes, no one was hurt.

As a result, 7 people were killed, two of whom turned out to be terrorists. Another 10 people were injured.

During the investigation, under unclear circumstances, the leader of the terrorists, Joseph Tsereteli, died in the detention center. Four more participants in the assault were sentenced to death. On October 3, 1984, the sentence was carried out.

The only girl Tinatin Petviashvili received 14 years in prison. She was amnestied in 1991. Now lives in Cyprus.
