Enema: what is it and why is it necessary?
This medical procedure sooner or later overtakes everyone. Its essence is the introduction of various fluids (water, medicinal infusions, solutions of soda, salt, etc.) rectally (through the anus) into the rectum or colon.
The goals of this "event" are completely different.
- Bowel cleansing before procedures. Including before some types of operations, childbirth.
- Fighting constipation and eliminating stagnant stool from the body.
- Prevention of various diseases.
- In developed countries, enema today is a popular cosmetic procedure. And although doctors are rather skeptical about this, this does not particularly affect its popularity.
Basic enema devices
Depending on the age of the patient and the purpose of the procedure, the following devices are used for its implementation:
- Esmarch's mug or its analogue is a combined heating pad. It is relevant when a thorough thorough cleaning is needed and if the amount of liquid injected is 1-4 liters. For children under 13 years of age, its use is contraindicated.
- Pear enema (photo below).

This device is also referred to as a “syringe”. In addition to enema (thanks to which this medical tool got its name), it is used for washing and sucking fluids from various body cavities, as well as for irrigation.
Initially, pear-shaped enemas were made from rubber. However, modern options are often made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or silicone.
Varieties
Classify such devices can be in different categories.
- Structure: not folding or with a replaceable tip. It can be plastic (hard) or rubber (soft). For particularly deep penetration, an elongated version is used.
- Material: rubber, PVC, silicone, plastic.
- Appointment: for an enema (type B), for washing and suction of liquids (type A), for irrigation of the vagina (irrigation types BI).

Pear enema: how to use it?
Using this tool is very simple. Following the algorithm, not even a very experienced person will be able to figure out how to put a pear-shaped enema correctly:
- Although some insist on the absolute sterility of this device - it is not so mandatory. If the instructions for the pear allow boiling it all or the tip - sterilize for health. In other cases, it is enough to wash clean with soap after use and immediately before the next. If the enema is placed crumbs up to 1 year (do not forget to consult a doctor first, and not with the all-knowing aunt Nyura at the entrance), the instrument should be sterilized in boiling water for about 15 minutes.
- Even if the syringe has a soft tip, it must be lubricated with petroleum jelly or baby mineral oil.

So, at 25-27 ° C the enema will seem cold, but it will not allow the intestines to absorb harmful substances from the fecal masses. This temperature is indicated for multi-day stagnation, when feces are already toxic. But 36.6-37 ° C is perceived by the body much better and is used for preventive and cosmetic procedures of this kind.
- Regardless of composition and temperature, enema water should be boiled or at least passed through a filter. The solution or infusion is done immediately before the procedure, and not in advance.
- Before starting the "event", you need to prepare not only the syringe, season it with a solution and lubricate the tip (in that order), but also the place of its holding. It is covered with oilcloth, the angle of which hangs down to the basin (liquid will drain here if it accidentally spills).
- An adult or child who is given an enema lays on his side, his legs bend at the knees and pull up to his stomach.
- Before the procedure, air is squeezed out of a pear-shaped enema (as from a syringe). Then its tip is inserted rectally with careful screwing movements until it rests against the intestinal wall or feces (somewhere 3-4 cm).
- Now gently pressing the pear, squeeze the contents. As soon as it is empty - the tip is carefully removed.
- After the procedure, the patient should lie down calmly for several minutes. If the urge appears, run to the toilet. If you have to deal with a speed bump, you should prepare the vessel in advance, which is substituted for its fifth point.
Indications and contraindications for use
The use of a pear-shaped enema should be agreed with your doctor. Indeed, in addition to the list of general indications and contraindications to the procedure carried out by her, each patient may have individual reasons to resort to or not to resort to the services of this device.
When is it worth doing enema with a syringe?
- Children under 13 years old.
