History
St. Alexis Hospital was established at the end of the 19th century with the help and funds of the family of entrepreneurs and philanthropists of the Medvednikovs. To build a clinic and an almshouse, the city authorities allocated a plot of land in the Kaluga outpost area. According to the will of the philanthropist, a hospital with 150 beds was supposed to receive patients of the Orthodox faith, without distinction of gender, age and social status. In the almshouse, 30 places were given to elderly men and women who needed constant care due to age or an incurable serious illness.
The complex was built according to the project of the outstanding architect S.U. Soloviev. The ensemble of buildings included two churches of the Tikhvin and Kozelshchanskaya icons of the Mother of God, a chapel, a residential building for staff (doctors, nurses, priests, etc.) and outbuildings. In the arrangement of the premises, all the achievements of engineering solutions of that time were taken into account - water supply, sewage, steam heating, ventilation system were carried out. The opening ceremony of the St. Alexis Hospital was attended by members of the royal family.
During the First World War, the institution opened a hospital for the wounded. Many townspeople contributed to the care of the soldiers and allocated personal funds to support the patient so that funding would not be scattered, many beds in the hospital became inscribed. For example, in the expense reports they wrote “a lieutenant or lieutenant N memory bed”, “a widow’s bed of captain of the guard N”, etc.
After the revolution
After 1917, a reorganization was carried out at the St. Alexis Hospital in Moscow - the almshouse closes, all buildings and services become medical departments, and the clinic itself specializes in tuberculosis. In 1922, two new departments were opened - therapeutic and surgical. In the same year, the hospital receives the status of a clinical medical institution and a new name. Over the next 30 years, she is known in Moscow as the 5th Soviet Clinical Hospital.
During the Great Patriotic War, an evacuation hospital was organized in the buildings, where thousands of soldiers and injured civilians were brought back to life. Throughout the existence of the St. Alexis Hospital, outstanding specialists worked in it, having developed a huge scientific base, many doctors made discoveries in medicine, found new methods in therapy, surgery, and the treatment of complex diseases.
Since 1992, the Fifth City Hospital was transferred to the Moscow Patriarchate and became the first Orthodox hospital in the capital. The Board of Trustees, led by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill, is in charge of managing the affairs. In connection with the new status, ancient temples were re-opened, consecrated and operate in the hospital.

Some patients felt that in the inpatient department nurses could not cope with the duties due to the fact that they were being processed while remaining on duty for two or three days in a row.
