Initially, OJSC NWSC was given the name "North-Western River Shipping Company". In those distant years, he had at his disposal 500 ships, of which 76 were freight and passenger. The main activity of the shipping company was the transportation of wood and food.
During the war, the crews of many ships of the company were directly involved in the hostilities. The shipping company was also involved in the evacuation of people from besieged Leningrad and the supply of food and medicine to the city. The crew delivered ammunition, military equipment and equipment to combat positions. In 1948, the shipping company established the regular movement of cargo ships along the Volga, and in 1964 began shipping to the ports of the Baltic, Caspian and White Seas.
The main production structure of the shipping company was formed in the 80s. At the same time, many port facilities and the Nevsky Shipyard were reconstructed. In the 90s, the company managed to maintain a strong position and practically its assets during privatization. Currently, 25% of the holding is owned by the state, 56.12% is owned by the Depository Clearing Company, and 10% is owned by individuals. The OJSC North-Western Shipping Company was registered in 1994.
Company Services
Today, the main activity of the holding is the transportation of goods from the Center of Russia along the Volga and Kama, as well as between the basins of the Mediterranean, Caspian, Baltic, Black and North Seas. At the same time, transportation is carried out not only in the country, but also along the rivers of foreign countries of Western Europe, Scandinavia, the Baltic states, etc. Every year, the company transports up to 6 million tons of cargo for customers, including the largest timber processing, metallurgical, and agricultural enterprises.
In addition to the actual transportation of goods, the scope of the holding includes:
Towing operations
At the moment, the company carries out all types of such work. Tugboats of the North-Western Shipping Company move floating cranes, construction platforms, and, if necessary, other vessels. Often, company crews have to participate in various kinds of rescue operations or environmental activities.
To receive the towing service, the client must conclude a contract with the shipping company in the established form. Also, such operations are performed by the company as part of the implementation of other orders of business partners. For example, towing may be necessary when fulfilling rescue contracts, pilotage, etc.
The company provides the following types of tows:
Emergency. Shipping specialists will deliver a lost or damaged ship to the port.
Planned towing of ships and facilities.
Intra port towing on roads and harbor .
In OJSC North-West Shipping Company, towing can be ordered in the main way (on a short cable), pushing, logging, etc. Operations are carried out by one or several vessels. The company's specialists carry out all the preparations necessary for towing: they count on the strength of the equipment parts, the stability of the ships, determine the likely ports of refuge, if necessary, reinforce superstructures, hull, decks, deckhouses, etc.
Crew selection
Special attention is paid to work with personnel at OJSC North-West Shipping Company. Over the years, the company has developed entire naval dynasties, whose members devoted themselves entirely to work on river vessels and in ports. An example is the Ore, Bibiksarov, Horn, Pozdnyakov.

Purchase / sale of ships
The sale of dry cargo is also what the North-Western Shipping Company is doing. St. Petersburg is a city in which, as already mentioned, the head office of the company is located. Turning to the managers of the holding, you can purchase ships or order their construction. The company offers its customers single-screw and twin-screw dry cargo ships (up to 7000 tons), oil tankers, non-self-propelled vessels.
Logistics
Among other things, the specialists of SZP carry out such an operation as synchronizing the transport of goods by sea and river, as well as by land transport between remote ports and regions. By ordering such a service, the company's customers are able to significantly save money by reducing the time of cargo delivery, reducing fuel costs, etc.
Holding newspaper
Among other things, the North-West Shipping Company (although it is more correct to call it river) is one of the founders of the Volgo-Nevsky Prospekt newspaper, whose publishing house is located in Nizhny Novgorod. It was founded in November 1934 on the basis of the Leningradsky Vodnik multi-circulation edition. They called it the "North-Western Water Engineer". In 1947 alone, 126 issues of this edition with a circulation of 2000 copies were published. The Stakhanov movement was reflected on its pages , the work of drummers of production, the work of courts, etc. were covered. The editorial office carried out a tremendous amount of work with letters from readers, answering questions of interest to them. In 1973, this print publication was renamed the Leningrad River Station, and in 1990 it was returned to its old name. In 1994, due to the difficult financial situation of the company, the newspaper was closed.

Once again, its editorial staff began to carry out their activities after 2 years - in 1996. However, the newspaper began to be issued in the previous circulation only in 2001. Its release was finally discontinued in 2005 due to the establishment of a larger-scale publication Volga-Nevsky Prospekt, distributed in the North-West, Central and Volga Federal Districts.
Statistical data
In 2014, the total revenue of SZP OJSC amounted to 6.1 billion rubles (21% more than in the previous year). At the same time, about 75% of the income was received from the transportation of timber and grain, as well as products from iron and steel enterprises and mineral fertilizers. According to its management, the growth of the economic indicators of the company was achieved mainly due to the renewal of the fleet - the sale of 14 old ships and the concentration of transportation on dry cargo ships built over the past 12 years.
North-Western Shipping Company: reviews
The customers have a good opinion about OJSC NWP. The company fulfills its obligations exactly according to the concluded agreements. But, unfortunately, in connection with the not very favorable economic situation in the country recently, the employees of the holding sometimes speak unflattering about it. It's all about a small salary and not too good, bureaucratic attitude to the staff. And the fact that the management decided to sell the old ships, is not to everyone's liking. People want to work and get a decent reward for this. However, in their opinion, the management is in no hurry to replace the old dry cargo vessels with new ones. But we will consider that the difficulties are temporary in the company, and soon all these problems will be resolved.

In general, the work of the oldest Russian company OJSC North-West Shipping Company (company address: St. Petersburg, B. Morskaya St., 37) can be called quite effective. Of course, the company is cost-effective, and its activities to a large extent contribute to the development of the economy not only of the Leningrad region, but also of Russia as a whole.
