Lord Waris (actor Hill Conlet) is one of the most mysterious and main characters from the popular series and the eponymous book "Game of Thrones." On behalf of him are several chapters of the novel. Appears in all parts of the book and in all seasons of the series. In the first season, the lord appears as a secondary character, but already from the second season his role becomes more and more important. In the royal court, he is called a Spider or a master over whispers.
"Game of Thrones". Start
When the right-hand tournament ended, Lord Waris, whose photo you can see in this article, visited Lord Stark and warned him that Joffrey's mother might try to kill King Robert. And also revealed the cause of death of Lord Arren. The spider offered Eddark Stark his help, but he refused. Later, the master over the whispers convinced Stark to plead guilty and put on black to save his daughter Sansa. He also reported to the Royal Council that Princess Daenerys, who had escaped from the rebels, became pregnant from the Dothraki khala Drogo. This made King Robert so angry that he ordered the death of Daenerys, her unborn child, and her brother in any way.
A little later, Varis met Illyrio in one of the dungeons of the red castle. There, friends discussed the war, which, in their opinion, should begin soon, and decided ways to solve problems in the impending crisis. In addition, Illirio said he would provide Varis with another fifty birds and, of course, gold.
After the death of the king
After the death of King Robert, Lord Waris remained to serve under the king, which became Joffrey Baratheon. When Joffrey demanded the appointment of the guilty party in the death of his father, Varis proposed Sir Baristan Bold. Joffrey and Cerseria chased away the illustrious knight. Subsequently, many called this act stupid and unnecessary. Later, Selmi joined the Queen of Dragons, which suggests the desire of Varis to alienate such a valuable knight from the young king.
Under the guise of a jailer, Varis came to see Edward Stark, locked up in a cell, and convinced him to confess to high treason, and also recognize Cersei's eldest son as the rightful king to save Sansa's life. In return, on behalf of the Queen, Spider promised Lord Eddard the right to wear black. When Lord Stark asked Varis who he actually served, the master over the whispers replied that he was living for the good of his country.
In the third season after the battle on Blackwater, the Spider tells the story of his castration to Tyrion, who at that time was the kingβs right hand. In the fourth season of Game of Thrones, Varis escapes with Tyrion from the royal harbor, saving the latter from execution. Their path lies in the city of Pentos.
Varis in season 5, 6 and 7
In season five, Waris loses Tyrion, as Mormon abducts him. However, in the season finale, Varis ends up in Mierin to become his master over whispers. In the sixth season, Lord Waris tells Tyrion information about the children of Harpy. He also reports that in Astapor, slaveholders came to power again. The spider was present when Tyrion freed dragons from their shackles. Varis also takes part in negotiations with ambassadors from Yunkai. Then Varis leaves Tyrion to go in search of a fleet for Daenerys. In Dorn, he meets with Lady Olennaya and Ellaria Sand, who provided the fleet. In the last episode, Lord Varis swims with Daenerys to Vasteras.
IN Seventh season, Lord Waris arrives with the Daenerys fleet on Dragon Stone. Throughout the series, he will be the Queen's adviser. However, in the seventh season this character does not play an important role.
The difference between the plot of the series and the book
In The Game of Thrones, Lord Waris did not leave the royal harbor at all. Varis helps Tyrion escape, but does not run with him, but passes the fugitive to Pentos to Master Illyrio. In the last chapter, which spoke about this hero, Spider kills the great Meister Pitsel, and then Kivan.
The mask of Varis
Also in the books, Lord Waris had several guises (there is a theory that he is faceless). As a professional actor, Spider can transform to appear in places where the presence of the Lord would be undesirable. For at least one disguise (Guard Rugen), he maintained a fake biography. Officially, this guard served in the dungeons, but none of those around suspected that Varis and this guard were one and the same person.
Also, Lord Varis sometimes appeared in the guise of a beggarly brother and a poor monk in dirty and shabby rags. His feet were barefoot and covered with mud all the time, and fake ulcers were present on his skin. This character carried an alms cup with him.
In some cases, the Spider appeared to be a burly and richly dressed woman with a pink round face and thick dark curls. Rarely, Lord Varis became a large and strong man with a chestnut-colored beard in which a redhead peered. But at Tobbo Mott's forge, he appeared in a purple cloak embroidered with silver threads. A hood was pulled over his eyes.
