My shoulder hurts. What should I do?

The most unique joint of the human body in terms of functional abilities and structure can be called the shoulder. Excessive loads that appear on this structure can lead to local inflammatory processes. Their consequence is the appearance of local edema, articular effusion, partial rupture of the tendon. Patients present the following complaint: shoulder pain.

This joint has a fairly high tensile strength, but at too high loads it can be damaged, which leads to a violation of its functions. Therefore, pain in the shoulder appears.

According to the mechanisms of occurrence, this symptom can be divided into several types. The first is pain that occurs in the upper part of the shoulder. It can spread to other parts of the body. Therefore, a frequent complaint of patients is pain in the neck and shoulder. Sometimes the phenomena of numbness and parasthesia join them. A frequent cause of this condition is the intervertebral hernia, which compresses the nerve roots extending from the spinal cord. In this case, a characteristic edema occurs, which serves as a cause of increased pain.

A rare, however, important reason for the development of such conditions is capsulitis. It is a state of muscle stiffness, which is accompanied by characteristic pain. It is characterized by a gradual development, during which the limb loses its ability to voluntary movements, or they become sharply limited. The shoulder hurts with this disease, but this symptom quickly disappears with timely and adequate therapy.

When performing non-standard movements (when painting the ceiling), the rotating cuff of the shoulder is often damaged. On the day of the injury, there are no characteristic symptoms. The next day, the patient goes to the doctor and says: "Shoulder hurts." This symptom appears when the limb rises above the horizontal level. A feature of this disease is the absence of characteristic signs on the radiograph.

Another reason for the development of pain in the shoulder joint is tendobursitis, which is an inflammation of the bags of this structure. The main reason for the development of such a disease is the calcification of muscle tendons. It is characterized by the appearance of pain in the shoulder area, which can radiate in the forearm, arm and neck, a significant restriction of passive and active movements in it.

The most common causes that cause the development of this symptom are tendonitis, which can also occur in the biceps of the shoulder, bursitis, collision syndrome, traumatic injuries, recurring dislocations, tumors, hereditary anomalies of the anatomical structure, diseases of the internal organs, and shoulder-shoulder periarthrosis. The following complaint will be common to them: the shoulder hurts.

Under the "collision" syndrome is understood pathological deposits of calcium salts, which causes calcification of the articular ligaments. It is characterized by the appearance of pains of a constant and intense nature that occur when the limb leads to a horizontal level.

In case of traumatic injuries, a condition occurs in which the head of the humerus "flies" from its physiological location in the joint. Sometimes tendon ruptures occur that provide rotational functions of the limb. Such damage is characterized by a persistent loss of joint function.

With diseases of the internal organs, irradiation of pain in the shoulder can occur. This is characteristic of the following diseases: pneumonia, liver pathology, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, tumors, cervical sciatica.
