All ice fishing lovers know that a winter fishing rod is a special tackle, the quality of which completely depends on the result of fishing. Despite the fact that there are a lot of various devices for fishing in the cold season, many people prefer to do them on their own. So, a self-made winter fishing rod can provide a good catch.
Features of ice fishing
Everyone understands that winter fishing is significantly different from summer fishing. So, fishing for a winter fishing rod is carried out through a hole drilled in ice. As a rule, its diameter is not very large, therefore, the tackle itself must have small dimensions. Home-made winter fishing rods are a short fishing rod with a fishing line and bait attached to it. Until recently, in the villages they were made of juniper sticks wrapped with reeds. Horse hair served as fishing line for them. How is a modern winter fishing rod made? With your own hands, this tackle can be made by almost any experienced fisherman.
The main types of ice fishing rods
As a rule, all winter fishing rods differ from each other depending on the lures used and the type of fish. Experienced anglers divide these homemade gear into 3 main types:
- for fishing on mormyshka;
- floaters;
- for fishing on a balancer and spinner.
Mormysh fishing rod

This type of winter gear is the smallest. This fishing rod is used to catch small fish. It should be comfortable and light, because it must always be held in your hand. When fishing on mormyshka, the fisherman must constantly “play” with the bait, moving the fishing rod. If the six-piece is heavy, and the cold handle (made of plastic) in a person very quickly gets tired and his hand freezes. A small mormyshka (the size of a match head) is used as bait. “Balalaikas” are considered the most convenient - winter fishing rods with a closed reel of small diameter instead of a handle. It is for her that they hold this tackle. The best material for the coil body is cork or durable foam. A long whip for this fishing rod is not needed, since the angler’s hand is almost always above the hole. The nod acts as a bite signaling device. It is he who gives the mormyshka movement. Continuously lowering and rising, he forces her to "play" in the water. A nod causes fish to bite. Some people prefer a fishing rod with an extended handle for fishing.

Fishing rod
This kind of winter gear is the easiest. In appearance, it resembles a miniature summer rod. Such tackle does not have to be constantly held in hands. Most often it is placed at the edge of the hole. Sometimes anglers use several fishing rods at the same time and carefully monitor the movements of the floats, waiting for a bite. During fishing, it is necessary to periodically check the tips and clean the hole from newly formed ice. Such a winter fishing rod is most suitable for fishing small-sized fish. With your own hands it can be done according to the old "grandfather" method. Such a bit is called “filly”, because they make a stable small base (handle) of birch, convenient for grasping by hand. It vaguely resembles the body of children's toys in the form of a horse. A short six is inserted into it. It can be removable or tight. The main thing in such a fishing rod is that the base should be larger than the diameter of the hole. Instead of wood, a durable foam can be used to make the handle.

A winter fishing rod can also be made from other improvised materials (plastic, cork). The main thing is that the strong six has a stable and reliable stand, and during bite, you could quickly grab it with your hand in the mitten.
Many beginner anglers do not know how to equip a winter fishing rod with a float. In fact, homemade jigs and drill bits may not be equipped with a coil.
A simple reel will be enough for successful fishing, since with such winter fishing, the holes do not change often and there is no need to reel the fishing line for a long time.
The fishing rod for balance and spinner
What is such a winter fishing rod? It will be more difficult to make it with your own hands than the two previous ones, since it has a more complex structure. It is intended for catching large and predatory fish. Since in winter such instances are located at great depths, this fishing rod is equipped with a reel or reel for winding long and thick fishing lines. When narrowing predatory and large fish, one often has to navigate the ice in search of prey. At the same time, a person has to repeatedly reel and unwind a fishing line on a fishing rod. This leads to a rather large size of the coil, because with it you can quickly collect gear and move to another place. The six must be resilient and strong so that it cannot be broken by a strong and large fish. It should also provide an energetic and quick cut.
Winter fishing rod for bream
This rod is a variation of the previous one. At the same time, such tackle can be slightly longer, because when fishing for bream, many anglers prefer to stand rather than sit. Often such fishing rods are made collapsible for easy transportation in a fishing box. The whip is most often inserted into the handle of a fishing rod.
Alterations from factory fishing rods
Many anglers are convinced that their homemade fishing rods are the lightest, most comfortable and perfectly balanced. Some even manage to make "advanced" rods from purchased fishing rods with a reel. To do this, they cut off the factory handle. A body for a factory coil is machined from solid foam. A whip is inserted into it. A special reel is attached to the handle, with the help of which they reel the fishing line when changing the hole. Such a mammal “balalaika” is more convenient.
Uncoiled fishing rod
This common fishing tackle is most common. It is a fishing rod with a plastic pole, a reel, a nod and a handle. Some novice fishermen do not know how to assemble a winter fishing rod. The six is selected based on the type of fish that a person plans to catch. So, for small perches, a plastic standard six is suitable. Its flexibility plays an important role at shallow depths of the reservoir. Six, due to depreciation and tension of the fishing line, should extinguish jerking fish. In this case, the catch will be easier to catch. When catching a large pike or pike perch, more rigid poles are selected, with which you can make a reliable hook.
A large reel with a convenient key brake allows you to change the depth of fishing very quickly. It contributes to the seamless winding of fishing line. When fishing at constant depths (5-6 m) it is more convenient to fish with a small fishing rod and reel. Manipulations with short rods are easier, but when you fish such as pikeperch, the bite is very strong and sharp, so in this case it is better to use fishing rods with longer handles.
What is equipped with a winter fishing rod
You can do a lot with your own hands, but some elements of the equipment of the rod still need to be purchased in specialized stores. So, for winter fishing you will need a fishing line (diameter 0.10-0.12 mm). It is better to choose stiffer products, because they have good tensile strength, are easier to clean from ice and less confused.
A nod for a winter fishing rod can be made of various materials, but the best is still considered to be made of wild boar bristles. You can also make it from an x-ray film or a piece of nipple rubber (4-5 cm). A fishing line is passed through a nod, the length necessary for fishing is measured. After that, they put it on top of the whip. With a rubber tube, the fishing line is pressed to the whip and “nods” when narrowed. For different fish it is necessary to use different types of this equipment. So, for a perch choose a soft and short nod, and for a bream or roach - elastic and long. The line through it should pass freely. A high-quality nod does not deform and does not break due to impacts on the ice surface, does not change its elasticity at various air temperatures. Its sensitivity is normal if it bends at about 30 ° under the weight of the mormyshka. Insufficient bending indicates that it is too rigid, and a strong bend will not provide the necessary game mormyshki.
It is better to choose a float with a slot, as it is easily removed from the fishing line. This eliminates the need for bandaging nozzles. Lures (mormyshka, balancers, spinners) are selected depending on the type and size of the fish.
