Where did the word quiz come from?

It’s rare about which term we can know as much as we know about the appearance of the word “quiz”.

In 1922, this term first appeared in the Soviet magazine Ogonyok. Its author is the famous journalist and writer of the time Mikhail Koltsov. And contrary to popular belief, he coined the term not from the Latin “victory”, but on behalf of a journalist Viktor Mikulin. Victor prepared an entertaining strip consisting of puzzles, charades, puzzles. Koltsov also titled the whole band “Quiz”, taking the author’s name and the end of his surname. With the writer's light hand, the word went to the people.

Quiz rules

In order for the game to be fun and interesting, several conditions must be observed.

  • The rules should be simple.

If participants think more not about answers to questions, but about how to keep in mind all the rules of the game, what good will come of this? The rules should be so simple that they can be remembered from one, a maximum of two times. It is advisable to give time to those who wish to take notes. A quiz is fun with simple rules.

  • The quiz should be interesting for all participants.

If the game theme is openly uninteresting to some of the players, then it is unlikely to be successful. If in a team of five boys and two girls to create a game with the theme "Features of aircraft construction of the second half of the XX century" - what are the chances of the involvement of young ladies? Unless all these children are from a special school with an in-depth study of aviation, otherwise you can’t do without disappointment at the end of the game.

  • The quiz should, in its availability, take into account the characteristics of the participants.

It makes no sense to use quizzes in the kindergarten dedicated to the work of Bulgakov. Students of the Faculty of Philology are unlikely to be passionate about playing with the topic of integrals. Before you come up with a topic or elaborate questions in detail, you need to decide what will be interesting specifically for these prospective participants.

  • If two or more teams are expected to compete, it is necessary to prepare judges or juries.

The number of people in the judiciary is determined individually. The main requirement is that the jury should be impartial, and its decision is not in dispute.
