The motor for the boat "Neptune-23", the technical characteristics of which will be discussed later, refers to the line of engines manufactured by the Moscow Engineering Plant from the 60s of the last century until 2008. The series included four modifications: "Neptune", "M", 23 and 25. They have similar parameters, differ in the settings of the power unit and ignition systems. The working volume of most models is 346.6 cubic centimeters. The 25th model has a size of 410 cubic meters. cm.
Description
Boat units "Neptune-23", whose characteristics are superior to other similar models - these are classic domestic engines. The model in question is considered one of the most reliable and quiet modifications. Next, we study in more detail the characteristics and features of this installation.
In fact, the power unit is a carburetor engine with a pair of cylinders and water cooling. The latest modifications were produced at the Chernyshev Moscow Machine-Building Plant.
Rings and pistons are identical to their counterparts from the IZH-Jupiter bike. The speed of the unit under consideration is 5 thousand rotations per minute with a maximum power of 23 horsepower. The working volume of the cylinders is 350 cubic centimeters, the standard propeller has a diameter of 28 centimeters with a pitch of 230 mm. With a mass of 44 kilograms, the engine consumes no more than 8.7 kg / h. The fuel used is a mixture of gasoline type A-76 and a suitable oil.
Features
The following technical characteristics of Neptune-23 can be attributed to the features:
- The presence of contact ignition with remote transformers type TLM.
- Unified fuel pump with models "Whirlwind" and "Hello."
- Equipped with a three-channel scheme for blowing cylinders of the loopback action.
- Detachable reverse thrust for simplified gearbox maintenance.
The motor in question is considered the quietest among domestic counterparts. This is achieved by rubber shock absorbers on the suspension bracket, which eliminates direct contact of the metal engine casing with the boat. Thus, additional sound insulation is provided.
Motor "Neptune-23": device
The unit in question is equipped with a liquid-cooled carburetor push-pull unit. It is designed to operate swimming equipment weighing at least 130 kilograms, the transom height of which does not exceed 405 mm. The minimum depth of the pond should be at least 80 centimeters. The transom and the engine itself are protected from accidental damage by a special reclining device. The screw "Neptune-23" has a reversible system, which provides forward, reverse gear, as well as idling.
The portable fuel tank for the motor has a quick-release lid, can be placed in various parts of the vessel. The power plant is cooled using a water pump. The design of the unit provides for mounting remote control, gas control and boat control. Lighting and parking lights are powered by a plug with magneto coils. The rubber shock absorber system with six attachment points facilitates control and reduces vibration.

disadvantages
Despite all the advantages, the Neptune-23 outboard motor has several disadvantages. Among them:
- There is a gap between the deadwood and the pallet. This leads to the filling of candles with a large wave. Alternatively, you can close this gap with a homemade rubber pad.
- The brass sleeve on the cooling unit has an absolutely smooth cylindrical surface, which contributes to the rotation of the impeller when it is excessively tightened. In this case, the cooling system malfunctions. The disadvantage can be eliminated by making three holes for the thread for additional fixation of rubber on the sleeve.
- The motor "Neptune-23" is equipped with a lower axle of the crankshaft with sealing cuffs, which are poorly protected from exposure to water and exhaust gases. This leads to corrosion of individual elements and poor start. It is possible to fix the problem by installing partitions in a deadwood or protective threaded sleeve.
Modifications
The last mass production of these engines was carried out in two versions: with standard and electronic types of ignition. The second option is somewhat more expensive, however, has several advantages. Firstly, contactless ignition is not subject to wet contacts. Secondly, such models are more practical and reliable. Judging by user reviews, the Neptune-23 outboard motor outperforms its competitor Whirlwind. In addition, the unit is not difficult to modify and sort out.
Malfunctions
The most frequent breakdowns of this engine are malfunctions caused by prolonged operation of the unit on a lean mixture or overheating due to a malfunction of the cooling system.
It is worth noting that functioning on a lean mixture leads to a decrease in the rate of fuel combustion, which is why afterburning is performed on an expansion cycle. This leads to an increase in the temperature of the piston elements. As a result of the deposition of varnish deposits, the breakthrough of gases in the crankcase chamber is intensified, and this is fraught with the burning of the piston bottom and rings.
In addition, an increase in temperature affects the mobility of the rings, heat dissipation. As a result, the material of these elements softens, they are rolling, and the power of the power unit decreases. Since there is a difference in the fuel supply to the cylinders, they do not work synchronously.
Cooling failure
Repair of Neptune-23 outboard motors may be required if engine cooling is interrupted. In the presence of a twin-engine installation, a drop in power is often not felt, however, after jamming, the unit does not start. This is due to the difference in the degree of compression of the cylinders.
If an outbreak occurs in damaged cylinders, the exhaust gases enter the crankcase, up to the inlet pipe or up to the carburetor. This causes a malfunction in the power unit. After several attempts, the situation is repeated again, although initially exhaust from the crankcase leaves. If you remove the candle from the problem cylinder, the Neptune-23 PLM will function on the working element. And if you close the high-voltage wire to ground, the power unit can work on one cylinder for a long time.
In case of a violation of the refrigerant supply, the number of revolutions is first reduced, then the sound of the unit's operation becomes dull. If the gas is suddenly discharged, the motor will stall. Damage usually does not happen, however, if you ignore or tighten the problem, pistons may jam, which will be indicated by the smell of burnt paint. The temperature at the muffler and around the head gasket rises to 100 and above degrees.
Recovery
Repair of Neptune outboard motors as a result of the above problems requires replacement or restoration of parts. This is provided if serious damage has not occurred (breakage of the connecting rod or piston). After cooling the power unit and replacing the necessary elements of the cooling system, it is necessary to remove the seizures resulting from the reaction between the aluminum body and the cylinder mirror. If this is not done, the compression will deteriorate significantly, and also the power will decrease, and start-up will be difficult. First of all, when the engine stops due to overheating, carefully check the cylinders for clogging of the working grooves and the formation of seizures.
Such defects are eliminated with hydrochloric acid and a fine-grained skin or with a scraper. Layering in the area of ββthe piston rings can provoke their rolling, which contributes to a mechanical violation of the mobility of the elements. To avoid this, carefully remove the rings and straighten the working grooves. It is worth noting that with critical wear of the piston and cylinder groups, it is difficult to start the engine and reduce its power.
Disassembly
Before disassembling the motor, it is necessary to purchase spare parts suitable for Neptune-23. In addition, you will need to check the condition of the power unit, make sure that the problems of the unit are associated with wear of the motor elements. After disassembly, it is advisable to examine the condition of all parts for performance. Perhaps a complete disassembly is not required.
To assess the degree of wear, the motor is disconnected from the deadwood, the carburetor, magneto, the head of the block, pipes and exhaust screens are dismantled. First, the ignition of Neptune-23 is checked by controlling the tightness of the spools to the crankcase. This process is performed by turning the crankshaft until the spools completely overlap the intake window. When you try to squeeze the element with your finger, the force of the pressure springs should be felt.
What else is checked after disassembly?
Pay attention to such elements of the Neptune-23 motor, the technical characteristics of which are indicated above:
- The condition of the upper and lower cuffs.
- Integrity of a mirror of cylinders and mobility of rings.
- The wear of the cylinder is determined using a caliper. Control starts from the top of the part.
- The gaps between the liner and the piston skirt are measured. To do this, use a narrow probe inserted through the exhaust strokes.
- Check the degree of wear of the main bearings of the crankshaft and their seats.
Complete disassembly
Such manipulation in relation to the Neptune-23 engine, the price of which starts from 40 thousand rubles (for a used model), is recommended to be performed in accordance with the instructions. The crankcases are dismantled using a special device in the form of a steel or duralumin plate with a diameter of 8 millimeters with a hole for a bolt of the M8-10 type. He rests on the butt end of the crankshaft. The plate should have sockets identical to the magneto fixing holes, as well as similar sockets for fixing the power unit to the deadwood. The piston pin is removed by heating it to 70-80 degrees and using a special device. When assembling, replace all elements whose wear exceeds acceptable standards.
