Alexander Baranov was born in the city of Alma-Ata on March 20, 1955. He studied and grew up in Kazakhstan.
Training and the first film
His cherished dream has always been cinema. He wanted to shoot his own paintings. And after graduation, he decided to enter the State All-Russian Institute of Cinematography named after Gerasimov. Alexander managed to get there the first time. The future Russian film director was one of the best applicants at his faculty. Studying brought Alexander a real pleasure.
After graduating with honors from the institute in 1985, Alexander was already working on his first film “Who are you, the horseman?”: He wrote a script for it.

"Needle"
In 1988, Alexander Baranov, along with Bahyt Kilibaev, became the screenwriter of the film "Needle". The main role was played by the legendary rock guitarist of the Soviet Union Viktor Tsoi.
According to the plot, the main character of Moro arrives in his native city of Alma-Ata. He wants to take the debt from Spartak, but he says that he can’t repay right now. Moreau stops at her friend Dina. But the girl behaves strangely, soon the hero finds out that she became a drug addict, and her apartment is the place of sale for cocaine. To save his girlfriend, Moreau takes her to the shore of the Aral Sea. Dina begins to slowly recover. But upon returning to the city, the girl again begins to take drugs. The protagonist decides to crack down on suppliers and distributors of disastrous potions. But one of them sends a killer to kill Moreau so that he does not interfere with the dirty business.
The film became instantly popular in Soviet times. Viktor Tsoi was recognized as the best actor of 1988.
"Shanghai"
Already in the new Russia, in 1996, the film "Shanghai." Alexander Baranov worked on the tape immediately on three fronts: as a director, producer and screenwriter.
The film tells about a small area in the post-Soviet outback called Shanghai. People of different nationalities once lived and did not notice that their roots go far into the history of Europe or Asia. But after the collapse of the great country, the Germans, who lived here all their lives, are going to leave for their historical homeland, without knowing a single German word.

"New Year's story"
Alexander Baranov in 1997 arrives in Moscow at the invitation of Bakhyt Kilibaev to make a new film “New Year's Story” - a comedy film.
During the filming of the children's New Year's program in the cast was a real Santa Claus. He has been fulfilling one desire for many years. This was learned by people from the unit to combat aliens. This group was very colorful: three guards, a revived mannequin, a boy and a girl from a variety show. But while they fought with an alien invasion, Santa Claus disappeared. Because the time of miracles has passed. But later, each of the heroes discovers the most necessary gift.
"Yolki-2"
Since then, Alexander Nikolaevich Baranov has remained in Moscow, preferring Russian cinema. One of the best recent works of the director is the New Year’s picture "Yolki-2", in which he worked together with Timur Bekmambetov. The film was released in 2011. In the picture, several fates of completely different people having a common goal are told at once.
Julia Snegireva receives a strange letter stating that the former lover will be waiting for her on New Year's Eve on Red Square. But there is one caveat - the letter is dated 1970. But by coincidence, they lost contact for a long 40 years. Grigory Zemlyanikin (the same pilot) was waiting for Julia all these years on Red Square on New Year's Eve. As soon as a woman arrives at the square, Gregory is sent on a flight. Thanks to the actions of completely different people, he learns that Julia is waiting for him. The pilot decides to land on a small runway. As a result, two loving people meet after 40 years.
