This publication is dedicated to the outstanding American cinematographer of the 1940-60s of the last century. David Miller - a famous US filmmaker was born in late November 1909 and grew up in New Jersey. Immediately after completing school, he began working as a courier at the National Film Service. Already in 1935, David began filming short films at the famous Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio together with Pete Smith. Together they shot a ten-minute comedy in 1937, Penny's Wisdom, which was Miller’s first film to receive an Oscar.
Independent directorial projects
The first Western film that Miller directed in 1941 on his own was Billy Kid. A year later, director David Miller turned to documentary, his work “Flying Tigers” narrated about the features of the profession of pilots making flights from America to China. The best project among the documentary chronicles of the director is the painting "Seeds of Fate". Despite the fact that the film turned out to be frankly propagandistic, most film critics appreciated the realism and reliability of the story about the horrors of war.
But it is also worth noting that the success of the work of David Miller was unstable. The most successful paintings of the period of the 50s include the film "Very Personal", which was based on the history of the orphan in a foster family. But the film “Sudden Fear” (1952), which received 4 Oscar nominations, was called a truly triumphant project by film critics.
At the peak of popularity
The most successful period in the creative activity of David Miller is rightly considered the 1960s. At this time, he was directed the film "Lane", the narrative of the picture famously spun around the vicissitudes of life of one of the richest families in London.
Before retiring, the director took off his variation of organizing a successful assassination attempt on Kennedy. This surprisingly unbiased picture does not have the main characters. In the director’s interpretation, “Enforce”, behind the assassination of the president is a group of wealthy and influential conspirators. The event film is logical and consistent in narration. The viewer can observe the process of training sniper shooters, working out the escape routes and alibi, the choice of a scapegoat.
Handwriting
David Miller retired in 1976, devoting the movie 41 years of his life. His last set picture was the film "Bittersweet Love." During his directorial career, he worked with such Hollywood stars as Robert Ryan, Joan Crawford, Kirk Douglas and many other famous actors.
All the works of David Miller have a characteristic feature of the production. As if the project was created not by a professional director, but by the characters of the films themselves, which allows you to more deeply experience the atmosphere and mood of the picture.
Famous film critic H. Erickson spoke of Miller “One of his talents is his truly light character and the building of excellent relationships with people with whom he had to work. He was one of those few people with whom work was a pleasure. ”
