These myths tell about the Ancients - a powerful race of gods who ruled the Earth in those distant times when the biblical Jehovah was not yet born. Cthulhu is one of them. Azatote
In Lovecraftian mythology, at the beginning of everything was the ruler of chaos, Azathoth - an incorporeal god, located in the center of infinity, outside of time and space. He is a primordial being, the same age as the Universe and the ancestor of Nyarlathotep, who, in turn, created Yog-Sotot, Shub-Niggurat, Cthulhu and other Ancients. Azathoth sits on a formless throne, surrounded by chaos. Sometimes he plays a flute on a flute, invented even before the birth of the universe itself. This melody is dangerous - the person who heard it in a dream irreversibly falls into a metaphysical trance, ceases to distinguish between sleep and reality, life and death, and dissolves in the violet whirlpools of chaos. Azathoth controls a multidimensional cosmos containing countless inhabited worlds. It can influence any creature from the visible and invisible spectra. In films about Cthulhu, the name Azathoth is almost not mentioned. Legends about him can be found only in the books of Lovecraft and his followers.
Other
Nyarlathotep is a god with thousands of faces. The only one from the entire pantheon of the gods of Lovecraft who can take on a human form. He often visits the Earth: he enters human cities under the guise of a prophet or pharaoh, predicts terrible misfortunes and sets disgusting experiences on people that cannot be whispered about.
Yog-Sothoth - the keeper of the keys to the Gate between the worlds, similar to a bunch of luminous balls. It resides simultaneously in all times and is constantly located next to each of the people. Yog-Sothoth has supernatural wisdom and exudes an atmosphere of cosmic horror. Meeting with him paralyzes the will, thinking and turns a person into an obedient puppet.
Shub-Niggurath is a gloomy deity of fertility. Otherwise, his name is Black Goat. He is amorphous, goat-footed and terrible, he is accompanied by a retinue of smaller monsters generated by him. With the help of special obscene rites during the full moon, the followers of the Goat summon their lord and indulge under his leadership vile excesses.
An important difference between Lovecraft myths is the lack of a strict plot structure. The inhabitants of myths are in obscurity and freedom. The reader himself structures the information and concocts the unknowable. For Lovecraft, it’s not the details and details that are important, but the reader’s confrontation with horror - the coexistence of a limited person and a limitless indescribable nightmare. Lovecraft warns us - people who encounter eternal secrets and try to figure them out are crazy. They will never know the universe.
Cthulhu
Cthulhu is the most popular and most vividly written Ancient in the myths of Lovecraft. They write about him in new interpretations of old myths, transmit information by word of mouth, and make films. About Cthulhu legends are composed by exalted members of secret societies, fans of his cult. On moonlit nights, they perform terrible rituals with human sacrifices in order to awaken the sleeping Cthulhu. They sing the majestic hymn - "Ph'nglui mghlv'nafh Cthulhu R'leh vhah'nagl fhtagn", which translates as "In the thickness of the waters, in his abode R'leh, Cthulhu is sleeping, but the time will come and he will wake up." When he, rising from his sleep, leaves the underwater abode and reigns on Earth, human history will go a completely different way. Lovecraft's short story “Call of Cthulhu” describes in detail the appearance of the ruler R'lyeh - a creature of enormous size, covered with green scales, flowing mucus. Cthulhu has a humanoid shape, his head looks like an octopus, and two large leathery wings flutter on his back. Cthulhu is terrifying, but attracted by the scale of charisma, he is terrible, but he is beautiful in his greatness.
There are very few films about Cthulhu and the Ancients. Most often these are low-budget works created by fans of Lovecraft. The most authentic is the 2005 film Call of Cthulhu. This picture, stylized as a silent movie, conveys well the atmosphere of the Lovecraftian story. In it, a careful attitude to the material and a reverent admiration for the greatness of Cthulhu is felt. The 2007 film “Cthulhu” was shot based on the story “Shadow over Insmouth” and has a distant relation to Cthulhu himself, and his name is used only to attract viewers.
Awakening
Cthulhu sleeps on top of a mountain in the town of R'lyeh, located at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. With a good arrangement of stars, a mountain with a sarcophagus of Cthulhu appears above the water, and it is at this time that it can be awakened. Then all the adherents of the Cthulhu cult on the planet must unite and, with the help of secret rituals, awaken the Ruler. And when he wakes up, he will help us raise a rebellion against the modern world. We, the true adherents of Cthulhu, will defeat and make all the insignificant slaves laughing at us kneel down.
Our Lord will take his throne and there will be a new life full of meaning, grandeur and delight. There will be new skies - the purple skies of multidimensional spaces. There will be a new Earth - the Land of believers in the unshakable traditions of the Ancient gods. There will be new people — people recreating the fundamental order of the Archons.
