The era of the 1990s is the history of a whole generation, its growing up and becoming. It is inextricably linked with the cultural side of development. Dozens of films and TV series have remained in my memory, on which, in fact, the children of the 90s grew up.
Russian TV shows of the 90s
Many of us remember the television of the time. The series of the 90s (Russian) reflected its specifics, therefore, detective projects dominated among them, where there is an active struggle against banditry (Kamenskaya, Agent of National Security). This did not prevent domestic television production from gaining momentum, and in the 90s the first Russian sitcoms (Strawberry), youth and comedy series also appeared. The list of the most sensational is presented below.
- "Streets of Broken Lights" (since 1998). The series is about police officers, their hard work and life outside of service.
- "Beware, modern!" (since 1996). Comedy series with Dmitry Nagiev in the title role.
- "Queen Margot" (1996). A series of eighteen episodes. The leading actors of Russia took part in the film adaptation of the famous novel by Alexander Dumas : Nikolai Karachentsev, Dmitry Pevtsov, Evgenia Dobrovolskaya and others.
- "The Waiting Room" (1998). A ten-part dramatic film about train passengers forced to make a stop in a small provincial town. Starring Vera Glagoleva, Mikhail Boyarsky, Vyacheslav Tikhonov and others.
- "Simple Truths" (1999). In fact, the first Russian series, the target audience of which was modern youth. It tells about the life of ordinary students.
Brazilian TV Series 90s: List
These once-popular television stories had several unique features. Firstly, the number of episodes (more than two hundred), which gives the right to call any Brazilian series “soap opera”. Secondly, famously twisted plot, not giving the opportunity to predict the ending. And, thirdly, the tangled family ties of the heroes were a mandatory item. Brazilian TV shows of the 90s, the list of which is presented in this collection, fully comply with all the above criteria:

Argentina: the best tapes of the end of the last century
The best series of the 90s produced in Argentina are characterized by the fact that the whole plot is built around one main character. This also reflects the name of the series.
- "Wild Angel" (1998). The series with Natalia Oreiro in the title role. Describes the fate and love of the orphan Milagros, who grew up in the monastery. In the course of the series, secrets from the life of Millie's parents are revealed.
- "Antonella" (1992). The role of the main character was played by the charming Andrea del Boca. The series includes detective elements, but still the main line is the love line.
- "Celeste" (1991). The series is about a poor girl who works in the house of her rich father, but does not suspect about it. This film was the first to raise the themes of homosexuality and AIDS.
- The Black Pearl (1994). The main role was played by the popular Argentine actress Andrea del Boca, who is also the performer of the title track of the series.
- Manuela (1991). The series was shot on the basis of Carolina Nabucco's novel "The Heiress." It is noteworthy that many famous musicians participated in the creation of this telenovela (Julio Iglesias, in particular). The series brought immense fame to Grecia Colmenares, the leading singer.
TV shows of Venezuela
In general, the series of the 90s (foreign, mainly) are distinguished by an intricate plot, a lot of storylines and characters. Venezuelan TV shows are no exception:
- Revenge (1990). He became the first Venezuelan series shown on Russian television.
- The Forbidden Woman (1991). The series where the main character is torn between two men. Irene can not decide who is more dear to her: Herman or his son Carlos.
- Kassandra (1992). The main role was played by Koraima Torres. The series was shown in a hundred countries around the world.
- "Only You" (1996). A dramatic series that raises issues of unequal marriage and family relationships.
- “Luis Fernanda” (1999). The first major role in her life was played by actress Scarlett Ortiz. She played a student girl who fell in love with her teacher.
Telenovelas of Mexico
Mexican TV shows of the 90s were one of the first foreign TV shows shown on Russian television. They had the same peculiarity as the Argentinean ones. All the series of the 90s were tied to a girl - the main character:

- The Usurper (1998). The story of two twin sisters and their cruel and domineering mother.
- "Wild Rose" (1989). The series was released on Russian screens in 1994 and immediately became one of the most popular. The main role was played by Veronica Castro, and she did it brilliantly. At the time of filming, she was already thirty-five years old, and she was playing the eighteen-year-old girl Rosa.
- Marisol (1996). The story of a girl with a disfigured face, vegetating in poverty and not knowing about the rich and kind father who is looking for her.
- "One day we will grow wings" (1997). The broadcast was conducted on the TVC channel (repeated three times in different years), according to high ratings during the show it can be judged that this series has become one of the most popular in Russia.
- "Just Mary" (1990). He became the fourth Mexican series shown on Russian television. It is the sixth remake of the original, shot in Argentina in 1967.
European series
Only a few series from Europe were able to break into Russian television in the 90s, completely flooded with Latin America's soap operas:
- "Commissioner Rex" (Austria, Germany, since 1995). The series is about detective Moser and his faithful dog Rex, who loves buns with sausage and easily solves any puzzles.
- "Poirot" by Agatha Christie (Great Britain, since 1990). Seventy films about detective Hercule Poirot were shot. The series has repeatedly been nominated for prestigious television awards in Britain.
- "Octopus" (Italy, since 1984). The last episode was released in 2001. The series, where Commissioner Cattani fights with the Sicilian Mafia almost one on one, has become one of the most popular in Europe.
- "First Kisses" (France, 1991-1995). The series is about a schoolgirl Justine and her friends. It has something in common with the series “Helen and the Guys,” since the main characters are sisters, as conceived by the producers.
TV shows USA
The series of the 90s foreign, in particular American, had a wider genre scope than Russian ones. There were a lot of soap operas, dramas, comedies, and science fiction:
- Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990). The last episode of the Los Angeles Golden Youth series was released in 2000. The television series raises youth and social issues of the time. However, much is relevant now.
- Charmed (1998). The project lasted eight seasons and was closed only in 2006. The fantasy story of three witch sisters has attracted millions of viewers around the world.
- Melrose Place (1992). He entered the list of the best classic shows, taking fifty first place out of a hundred possible.
- "Love and the Secrets of Sunset Beach" (1997). It was broadcast for two years. The series talked about the life of young people from California. Ratings began to decline after six months of display.
- "The X-Files" (since 1993). The science fiction series lasted nine years and became an integral part of the pop culture of the 90s. He tells about the work and personal life of two FBI agents, whose roles were played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
Children's Series 90s
A selection of TV shows targeted at children and adolescents:
- Lassie (Canada, 1997). The series is about the thirteen-year-old boy Timmy and his faithful dog Lassie, who performs a feat in every episode. It is a remake of the original, released in 1954.
- "Sabrina is a little witch" (1996). A television series about a teenage girl who learns that she has magical powers. Sabrina learns to live with the thought that she is a witch. The series lasted seven seasons.
- "Harry is a Bigfoot" (1993-1996). A series about the Hendersen family who managed to make friends with a bigfoot.
- Alf (1990). It has been broadcast in Russia since 1996. The series is about a small inhabitant of the planet Melmak, a decent glutton and a merry fellow.
- “Xena is the Queen of Warriors” (since 1995). The series is about the invincible warrior and fearless girl Xena, who is ready at any time to help those in need.
Sitcoms of the 90s
The heyday of the Russian sitcom (situational comedies) occurred in the 2000s, while in Europe and the USA this genre was already represented quite widely:
- "Helene and the Guys" (France, 1992). The sitcom lasted six seasons and closed in 1994. However, the producers decided to give a second life to the heroes and launched the series "Dreams of Love" (1995). The action was moved from the campus. The guys have already completed their studies, and they have begun an adult life.
- "Friends" (USA, since 1994). The series was shot for ten years and became the most popular comedy project of its time, bringing great fame to all actors, as well as many awards and television awards.
- "Married ... with children" (USA, 1987-1997). A comedy series about the difficult life of one big family.
- The New Addams Family (Canada, USA, 1998). A remake of the 1964 series in a more modern reading.
- "Mr. Bean" (Great Britain, 1990-1995). The series is about a strange Englishman, Mr. Bean, about extraordinary problems and methods for solving them.
So, the presented list is only a small part reflecting the pop culture of that generation. But these popular TV shows of the 90s were undoubtedly the most memorable.
