What is the movie about?
Captain Petrov and his team took a group of polar explorers from the station and are preparing to sail towards Australia. The icebreaker Mikhail Gromov is dangerously close to the drifting iceberg. At this moment, one of the crew members falls overboard. Petrov gives the order to save the man, and he tries to maneuver and go around the ice block. Unfortunately, all efforts are in vain - the person is drowning, and the icebreaker is seriously damaged. First-timer Yeremeyev did not waste time mourning over his comrade and quickly reported what had happened to Leningrad. The management dismisses Petrov and temporarily transfers all powers to the rapporteur. Within a couple of weeks, a new captain should be delivered to the ship.
Yeremeyev is glad that he so successfully sat down his commander. He always believed that the captain gave too much freedom to his team. And Sevchenko will not make long conversations and quickly restore order. This happens, but with one caveat - two captains remain on the ship, since the helicopter needs to be repaired and it is still not possible to send it from the icebreaker Petrov. Sevchenko quickly evicts his predecessor from the cabin and begins to "build" the team.
Dangerous situation
Meanwhile, the damaged ship is drifting and overgrown with ice. The team is forced to live starving and wait for help from Moscow. Petrov informs the new captain that the iceberg is moving behind the icebreaker and that even greater tragedy is possible. Sevchenko forbids talking about it on the air. Petrov decides to independently verify his fears. He takes a rocket launcher and sets off to explore the surroundings. Having fallen into a snow cave, he is attacked by a leopard, but manages to give a signal in time. The team takes on board their former captain, whose legs are frostbitten.
Lack of food leads to riot on the ship. Sevchenko locked in a cabin. The ship's doctor tries to confront the rebels and dies. Petrov frees the hostage, but the team has already come to their senses and looks at the labor of his hands. The old man, who raised the rebellion, is trying to commit suicide. After the doctor’s funeral, everything returns to normal. The iceberg came close to the icebreaker. Petrov assumes the responsibility of guiding the ship along cracks into open waters. Sevchenko in a helicopter flies for reconnaissance.
The captain's maneuvers help the icebreaker get out of the ice captivity. The helicopter crashes, but the team manages to save Sevchenko and the pilot. “Novorossiysk” comes to the aid of a brave sailor. From him in a helicopter flies stock of provisions and wife Petrova.
