Currently, Russia imports a huge number of foreign films. Their original names are translated, as they are presented in a foreign language. The name of the picture plays an important role in understanding the film and arousing interest in it, translators must be responsible so that the Russian version of the translation is very sonorous and significant as the original. Sometimes there are situations when the name of the film does not correspond to its content, or when translating there is no genre adaptation.
Adaptation strategies
When translating names, a significant number of so-called adaptation strategies are used. The most elementary is the literal or direct translation of the name of the film, which is used in the absence of untranslatable socio-cultural realities and an obvious conflict between content and form, for example, the Welcome to Paradise project (1984), which was released in Russia under the title “Welcome to paradise!". Reviews called the translation of its name - tracing.
There is another strategy: called transformation, i.e. name change due to various factors - functional, lexical, pragmatic or stylistic. That is, the translation is accompanied by semantic adaptation, in which the genre or semantic deficiency of the exact translation is compensated by the addition or omission of individual lexical elements.
Another strategy that translators are actively using is to completely replace the name of the movie due to the inability to reproduce and convey the original meaning of the source text. A vivid example will be the names of the films: Vice (2014), Ins Blaue (2012), Into the Blue (2005), which were released in Ukraine with the same name - “Welcome to Paradise”. Reviews about them were different, however, like the genre and semantic load.
2005 Adventure Thriller
The domestic rolling title of the project directed by John Stockwell and screenwriter Matt Johnson sounded quite tempting and at the beginning justified itself completely. The first minutes of the timing of the picture “Welcome to Paradise!” The audience’s reviews called it a great opportunity to admire the wonderful views of the depths of the ocean in the Bahamas, to appreciate the figures of the main characters, the half-naked beautiful divers of Amanda and Samantha, who, in the company of their guys, are engaged in the search for an old brig drowned with gold. However, further the emotion of the beholder is replaced by anxiety for the fate of the main characters, because instead of the treasures of young people, young people manage to find a sunken modern plane with a huge batch of heroin.
Don't relax
From now on, the film “Welcome to Paradise!” fully justifies the declared genre policy of the adventure thriller. A completely different movie begins with shootings, explosions and fights. There is no time to contemplate the charms of nature and the tanned bodies of the main characters. The pearl of the picture was the performer of the main female role Jessica Alba. The girl was so good that, fearing excessive criticism, the studio resorted to using computer graphics and adjusted a number of frames so that her bikini hid her figure a little more. This fact did not escape the attention of the audience who watched "Welcome to Paradise!" Their reviews were unanimous: "Jessica in a bikini is good, but the film is not very." Maybe that's why this opus at the US box office did not reach the 20 million box office, but it went very well in other countries.
Sequel
The film directed by Stephen Herek and screenwriter Mitchell Kapner titled Welcome to Paradise 2: Reef (2009) has nothing to do with the original, except for the water theme and problems lurking in the depths of the sea. The first thing that caught the eye of the viewer while watching the project was a mass of elastic and tanned female bodies against the backdrop of the bewitching beauty of the beaches, clear ocean water and the splendor of the insanely blue sky. Already just for one such beauty the tape could be watched. No wonder the film "Welcome to Paradise 2: Reef" reviews dubbed the "movie of pretty faces and pumped up torsos." However, the stars in the cast have diminished. Of the more famous filming, Laura Vandervoot (“Competitors”) took part. But what could be expected from the project, which immediately appeared on the video?
Yielding to the original standard
Most often, a sequel to a well-known project that goes directly to DVD does not meet the standard of the original and the expectations of the viewer. But the film “Welcome to Paradise 2: Reef” kept the average result and pleased the viewer with a good storyline, leading actors and sound camera work. It’s difficult to find fault with the technical side of the picture, everything was done perfectly: both plans under water and on land. The musical accompaniment also organically fits into the outline of the film. The plot of the criminal thriller “Welcome to Paradise 2” was criticized by critics as moderately interesting, although some seemed too drawn out to some. There is intrigue in the film, it can also be regarded as an argument for viewing.
The same name, but not rated
According to statistics, 40% of foreign films in the Russian box office have names that do not carry a literal translation. Distributors tried to use more intriguing titles to attract a larger audience to watch. However, such a trick did not materialize in two films with the same title, "Welcome to Paradise." Finding reviews about them is extremely problematic, and they are too restrained.
- A drama produced by Germany by screenwriter, director and producer all rolled into one, Rudolph Tome, released in 2012, is a film in the film. The plot tells about a novice director who is trying to shoot his first full-length project. But the fact is that the episodes played out in front of the camera begin to affect the real life of the filmmakers. Gradually, an explosive mixture of fiction and reality occurs. This is the intrigue of the drama Welcome to Paradise. Reviews of the film among film critics are mostly positive, although the film did not get worldwide popularity.
- The 1984 American television project was directed by Daniel Heller based on the script by Stirling Silliphant. The storyline of the film tells the story of the adventures of three friends who, saturated with an everyday routine, go in search of pleasures to the legendary beach resort. Moreover, it was on it two decades ago that they had the most vivid romance novels in their entire lives. Will they be able to change their lives or the heroines will find themselves in trouble, tells the picture "Welcome to Paradise." Reviews of the film do not contain spoilers.

Low budget thriller
The rather low-budget thriller of 2014 by Vice director Brian A. Miller, shot according to the script of a creative union by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore, is called by critics a rash attempt to mix episodes and styles of science fiction films that have become cult: “Matrixes”, “The Western World” , “Remember Everything,” “Blade Runner,” and “Robocop.” The attempt is a priori unsuccessful and also cheap, so "Welcome to Paradise 2", the viewer certainly will not see. Although the same “Blade Runner” might have looked like this if it had not been created by Ridley Scott, but by some unknown Hollywood studio, stamping category B paintings in the 80s.
Plot
The film “Welcome to Paradise” (2014) tells a story that happened in a futuristic resort town. The local population of the city consists of androids, outwardly indistinguishable from people. This is what the respectable businessman Julian (Willis) builds his business on. It represents a unique service - the fulfillment of the most dirty, forbidden and vicious desires of people. After all, Androids will endure everything, and after the procedure they are erased, and satisfied perverts, having paid for the embodiment of their desires, leave the resort. Once the android girl Kelly (Embier Childers), having saved all the atrocities in her memory, escapes. Julian sends an army of armed robots to search for and capture her. The hero of Bruce Willis is not worried about the costs of the massacre.
Waste of time?
In order to dilute the android action with a fraction of human emotions, the creators introduce the engineer who created Kelly into the plot (Brian Greenberg). The man created a robot in the image and likeness of his wife, so he is trying to help her. To aggravate the conflict, the scriptwriters follow the trail of fugitive seasoned seasoned detective Roy (Thomas Jane), who is eager to destroy Julian’s shameful business. Bruce Willis does not save the situation, although in another less predictable and superficial film, his appearance as the main antagonist would give the viewer real pleasure. By the way, this is not Miller’s first baptized critics project, in which Willis participated. In August last year, it was released, but the Prince movie, which Jeremy Passmore and Andre Fabrizio also worked on, was forgotten. Perhaps this creative team will decide on the third attempt, and the viewer will soon see "Welcome to Paradise 2."
