Sex Reassignment Surgery: From Psychiatrist to Surgeon

It may seem unnatural and wrong to many, but there are people for whom this is the only way to a normal life. For them, their own body is a mistake of nature, they feel uncomfortable in it, alien. They can obey the “rules of the game” imposed on them, but in reality they will only portray the person who others see. And in the soul they will always be their own opposite, at least on the basis of gender. These people are transgender people, and the fact that they feel that they are of the opposite sex is not a whim or a perversion. Nature, indeed, can be mistaken. Fortunately, medicine has learned to correct these errors in many ways. Sex change is just such a correction of natural creation.

In fact, transsexualism is the only indication for such surgical intervention. This condition is congenital in nature, in contrast to various deviations of the sexual plan, such as transvestism, homosexuality and so on. It is precisely transvestites and homosexuals who are most often refused clinics, as they do not insist that they need a sex change operation. And in order to distinguish real transgender people from them, at the first stage, a psychiatric examination is carried out when contacting doctors. This is a serious and quick examination, during which the psychological stability of the patient is simultaneously determined, because he will face a complete life transformation.

The next stage can be called “fitting” - a person is invited to live the life of a person of the opposite sex, not a day or two, but at least a year. At this time, he can still abandon his intentions, because then there will be no turning back.

Then follows hormonal preparation. By the way, a person will subsequently have to take hormonal drugs throughout his life. Hormones begin to change their appearance: in women, body hair growth intensifies, the voice becomes coarser, menstruation ceases, and men acquire some female outlines.

Only after all these preliminary stages is the actual sex change operation necessary.

The transformation of a man into a woman on the surgical table begins with orchectomy - this is called the removal of the testicles. The production of testosterone by the body stops and you can already reduce the consumption of female hormones. The next stage - vaginoplasty - as the name implies, is the formation of a female genital organ. Typically, penile tissue is used for this. When the sex change operation is carried out using modern technology, it is even possible to maintain the sensitivity of the organs - a “newborn” woman will be able to experience an orgasm. The finishing touch is the implantation of breast prostheses.

A slightly more complicated sex change operation is performed in the opposite case - when a man is made of a woman. First, the mammary glands are removed (this is called a mastectomy), but so as to preserve the nipples and place them in natural places on the body. Then the penis is formed, for which the patient’s own tissues are also used. The urethra is placed inside the penis, and the scrotum is made from the labia into which the prosthetic testes are implanted. The final stage is the removal of the uterus with appendages.

When the sex change operation has passed, the result still does not look aesthetically pleasing, so the patient will subsequently need one or more cosmetic surgeries, but the most difficult one is already behind him.

However, the most difficult is only from a medical point of view. Ahead of man is still a long process of getting used to his new body, and everyone experiences it in his own way. But, as practice shows, after a professionally performed operation, none of the patients regrets the decision made earlier.
