Transport Categories
The existing driver categories in Russia are divided into 6 types. Each category is identified by Latin letters and allows you to control a specific type of vehicle. The list of categories of vehicles for which a license is issued is approved by the Rules for passing qualification exams and issuing driver’s licenses dated 12/15/99 with amendments and additions:
- Category "A". Motor transport (motorcycles, scooters).
- Category "B" (however, the people often call it the Russian letter - "B"). Cars with a maximum mass of 3500 kg and the number of seats is not more than 8.
- Category "C". Cars weighing more than 3500 kg, not intended for the transport of people.
- Category "D". Cars with more than 8 seats and specially designed for transporting people.
- Category "E". Compositions of vehicles with a tractor.
- Category "M". This is a completely new category, introduced on November 5, 2013. Light two-wheeled motor equipment - mopeds, electric mopeds, tricycles, scooters, light ATVs up to 50 cubic meters.
Category "A"
The rights of category "A" give the right to drive motor vehicles. This is mainly a two-wheeled mechanical transport, but this category also includes three- and four-wheeled light vehicles with a weight of not more than 400 kg. Motorcycles can be with a sidecar, with or without a trailer. The age from which you can get a driver's license for the right to drive motor vehicles is 16 years old.
Category "B" ("B")
This category allows you to drive cars and small vans, the maximum weight of which is 3500 kg, and the number of seats does not exceed eight. The driver's seat in this case is not considered.
Also, heavy motor vehicles with a weight exceeding 400 kg belong to this category.
A trailer weighing no more than 750 kg can also be attached to such vehicles. If this weight is exceeded, you can control such a tool only if the following conditions are met:
- the mass of the trailer does not exceed the mass of the car;
- the total mass of the "car plus trailer" does not exceed the permitted 3,500 kg.

Theory
Examination tickets for traffic rules consist of 20 questions. In order to pass the exam, you must answer 18 of them.
Preparing for exams is best done online, via the Internet. The fact is that changes in traffic rules are made quite often, about 1-2 times a year, and you may come across a situation in which the rules have recently been changed.
If you are studying theoretical part in a driving school, the questions should already be adapted to the new legislation. If you are going through a theory while studying paper media, pay attention to the time period for their publication and separately require amendments and additions to the legislation (later period).

Practice
Practical exams are held at the circuit, where you have to pass three sets of exercises. Please note that in the case of category "B" the list of exercises is not subject to change (when passing "B" there are three options for complexes, driver category "A" involves only one complex).

You can take on the right both on a motorcycle driving schools, and on your own. Just note that another driver with permissions must deliver your motorcycle to and from the exam site. In addition, the motorcycle must be equipped with a full package of documents. It is mandatory to have a certificate of registration and insurance with your name inscribed in it.
In addition, the dimensions of the motorcycle should also be considered. On a motorcycle with a sidecar, it’s almost impossible to drive the standard “eight” and “snake”, in addition, the easier the motor transport, the easier it will be for you to pass exams.
Surrender to category "A" does not imply practical driving within the city limits, in contrast to surrender of rights to "B".
How to open category "A" if there is already a "B" ("B")
If you already have category “B” and you successfully passed the theoretical exam no more than 3 months ago, you do not need to pass the theory again.
In the event that more than 3 months have passed, the theory will have to be taken anew. There will be no changes in it, tickets will fully correspond to those for which you were preparing earlier (except for cases when new changes and amendments to the SDA were adopted).

Since 2013, such an opportunity no longer exists. The theoretical part will have to be taken again if more than 3 months have passed since the previous delivery.

Required documents
In order to obtain category "A" rights, you must provide the following documents:
- an application of a standard form (issued on the spot or you can download the form on the Internet);
- identity document;
- state duty receipt;
- document about the end of the driving school (original and copy);
- medical certificate of the established sample (original and copy).
If you already have category “B,” you will need your driver’s license.
Another nuance: if you receive a medical certificate in a private center, you also need to confirm that this center is licensed and has the right to inspect drivers. Typically, private companies providing medical and driver commissions services also include a confirmation sheet on your certificate - a certified copy of a permit or other document that allows them to work in the market for providing medical services. Some organizations (especially in large cities) provide their data directly to the traffic police, and then such confirmation is not required.
These documents must be addressed to the traffic police at the place of your registration or place of actual residence.
Differences between categories "A" and "M"
Due to the ever-changing legislation, many drivers often get confused between category "A" and the latest category "M". Some citizens believe that if they purchased a moped, category “A” is required. In fact, for those vehicles that fall into category "M", the opening of additional categories is not required (if there is already an "A" or "B" - any of them). In this case, it is only required to pass a theoretical exam, a driving test is not required. Both driver categories receive from 16 years.
Training in a driving school or self-training?
Previously, there was the opportunity to independently prepare for exams in theory and driving and come only to the exam itself. This is currently prohibited by the laws of the Russian Federation.
