The actors who went down in history do not cease to excite representatives of the modern generation. Those who inspired our great-grandmothers continue to be role models for the youth of the new millennium. What actors and actresses can rightfully be called the best in the history of cinema?

world cinema legends

Greta Garbo - a favorite of the public of the early twentieth century

One of these actresses was the inimitable Greta Garbo. Her family was in complete poverty after the death of her beloved future actress father. Therefore, Greta, at the age of 15 years old, had to leave the walls of the school in order to get a job in a hat store. The young girl was already inspired by the legends of world cinema, but due to poverty she could not go to study acting.

Hollywood star from the hat store

One fine day, fate smiled at Greta (her real last name is Gustaffson). The guest of her store was a well-known operator of a studio located in Stockholm. The young man invited the girl to take part in the filming of a commercial. As soon as Greta was on the scene, the studio staff realized: the girl looks in the frame just amazing. Since 1922, the future actress began to hone her professional skills at the Academy at the Stockholm Drama Theater. The meeting with the director Moritz Stiller, who became the author of her pseudonym, turned out to be fatal for her.

The director really appreciated the talent of Greta, however, his hobby concerned only her acting abilities. Stiller did everything so that Greta could break into a big movie. Then, in Berlin, the actress met with another serious director - Louis Mayer. This time, the actress opened the way to Hollywood.

Decision to quit career

However, having achieved success after filming in many famous films, Greta Garbo dreamed of leaving the acting path forever. Only financial condition shaken after the Great Depression prevented her from realizing this intention. But at the age of 36, she still took this step. A flurry of critics that fell upon the actress and general attention did their job, because even the legends of world cinema inside themselves remain ordinary people. Having put things in order, Greta Garbo began to live an ordinary life.

Great Katherine Hepburn

One of the greatest actresses in the history of cinema is also rightfully called Katherine Hepburn. She was born in America, Connecticut, in 1907. From childhood, Catherine went in for sports, and in 1928 she received a degree in philosophy and history. Over the course of her career, she received the Academy Award four times and rightfully won the title of legend of world cinema. For the first time, the actress starred in the film "Bill of Divorce" in 1932. The next film called “Bringing up Baby” did not bring her success, and the actress decided to make a two-year pause in her career.

Life-long romance

Then shooting in other successful films followed: Philadelphia Story, Woman of the Year. It was on the set of the last film that the actress met Spencer Tracy. The affair with the actor lasted about thirty years, despite the fact that Tracy was an alcoholic and was married to Louise Treadwell. The actress embodied the real symbol of the American woman of that time and the legend of world cinema. The culture of communication Katherine did not prevent this: despite the imperious and unfriendly nature, she almost always remained the favorite of the public. Together with Spencer, Tracy Hepburn starred in nine films. I must say that Tracy, thanks to his talent, won the title of the legend of world cinema. The last film in which the actress starred was released in 1994.
