Swiss law restricts arms exports. In order not to lose sales markets in 1974, it was decided to conclude a framework agreement with JP Sauer und Sohn GmbH (founded in 1751, Suhl, Germany). Thus, in Switzerland they produce weapons for consumption on the domestic market, in Germany at the JPSauer & Sohn plant for export.

History

The Zig Sauer P-226 pistol has its own history of creation. It all started in the late seventies of the last century. The US government has decided to replace obsolete pistols in its army. A competition was announced in order to find the best option of all those proposed by world arms manufacturers.

SIG Sauer set its specialists the task of creating a new pistol with high combat characteristics. The main struggle unfolded between the Berretta M9 and P226. The American government preferred Italian weapons, citing the lower price of the product.
