Director Ray was ill with cancer at that time, and one day he was visited by the thought of creating a movie that would reflect the whole process of his passing away, long and painful. Filming began, and since it was the first cinematic experience for Jarmusch, the film about the death of a friend became his debut. "Lightning over water" - this is the name given to this requiem movie. Director Wim Wenders also took part in the production.

Director style

Initially, Jim Jarmusch, whose films were noticeably different from other films shot in Hollywood, was a supporter of the so-called independent cinema. He makes several films in his own way, including Mysterious Train and Outlaw. These two films, together with "More Strange Than in Paradise," made up a kind of trilogy that represents America through the eyes of a foreigner.

In 1986, Jarmusch released a six-minute video "Coffee and Cigarettes" with the participation of two popular actors, Stephen Wright and Roberto Benigni, who drink coffee and smoke cigarettes under a quiet intimate conversation. It turned out a finished commercial, but Jim Jarmusch did not sell it, but laid the foundation for a series of 11 short stories in which famous actors communicate under coffee and cigarettes.

Mystery and parodies

Jarmusch is known for his ability to make compilation films from several scenes. For example, the film "Night on Earth", released in 1991, consists of five small stories on the theme "Night, City, Taxi". The film tells about five cities in different parts of the world, about five random encounters, and all this is presented with kind, a little sad humor.

In 1995, the director made the film "Dead" in the mystical western genre. The film did not receive a proper rating, and only a few years later at the Cannes Film Festival critics gave a positive review.

In the film "The Way of the Samurai," Jarmusch parodies gangster fighters. This film was the first sign in a series of films on a Japanese theme. Edward Zwick, Rob Marshall, Quentin Tarantino, Sofia Coppola followed their work on the Land of the Rising Sun and presented it to the audience following Jim Jarmusch. This fact suggests that directors of independent cinema, which Jarmusch is, often become pioneers of new solutions in cinematic art.

Looking for new

In 2005, the director began to lean towards the mainstream, his marginal protagonists gave way to successful personalities. The film "Broken Flowers" has become a prime example of a new style. The main character, a successful programmer Don Johnston (played by Bill Murray), is trying to find the alleged mother of his unexpectedly announced son. To do this, he recalls all his mistresses and begins to systematically visit them. For "Broken Flowers" Jarmusch received the Grand Prize of the Cannes Film Festival.
