Plot
Uman Colonel Taras speaks to a large crowd and talks about the need to protect their lands from hated Poles. They became adults and strong guys who already have their own view of the world and their place in it. Taras collects the Cossacks and together with them goes to the Zaporizhzhya Sich. For two years they sat idle and bored without fighting.
In Sich, the sons of the colonel, along with other Cossacks, are given to all the joys of life. They drink, have fun and fight for the amusement of local beauties. Taras looks at it with hatred - the local chieftain lost his former strength and ceased to be an authority among the local population. He takes all his rights from him and transfers them to his longtime friend Kirdyage. While his party was feasting in Sich, messengers arrived from their own farm with bad news. They brought the body of Taras’s wife wrapped in a carpet and said that the Poles had captured the village and now they are mocking the people. They drive away into captivity, rob and kill everyone who does not agree to become slaves.
Taras collects an army and advances to the Commonwealth. He intends to put an end to the war and permanently rid the native land of the Poles. He could not have thought that his youngest son would become a traitor. For the sake of love for the Polish panel, Andriy goes over to the side of the enemy. Taras witnesses how his beloved son traps the Cossacks and destroys them. Heartbroken father cunningly leads him into the woods and kills him with his own hands.
At this time, the Tatars attack, and the Cossacks are forced to split up. A weakened army is defeated by the Poles, to whom help has already arrived. Taras with his unit breaks into the camp of the enemy in order to save the eldest son. He was only a few minutes late - Ostap was executed before his eyes.
Taras orders his soldiers to retreat in order to save their lives. They are too weak for fighting at the moment. He himself remains to repulse the whole army. But the forces are unequal, he is captured. A colonel’s demonstrative execution is organized on the mountain — it is burned alive. Before his death, he manages to tell the Poles that they will soon find out what Russia and the Orthodox faith are.

He accepts death at the hands of his father humbly and does not try to engage in a fight with him. In his heart he realizes that he has earned such an inglorious end. Igor Petrenko played a young and in love Cossack with his inherent tragedy in his eyes. Even at the moment of betrayal, the viewer has a feeling of pity for this stupid boy, whom fate had no choice.
