A secluded place cut off from civilization, most often an island, is a unique environment for a film project of any genre. Filmmakers will either throw children on the island and arrange a test in the style of āLord of the Fliesā Harry Hook, or they will leave a couple of young people who turn this place into the āBlue Lagoonā by Randal Kleiser, especially inventive made him suffer alone, giving him a ball as an interlocutor named Wilson (Robert Zemeckis in The Outcast). But it is much more interesting to turn the island into a kind of trap in which the main characters remain face to face with danger. This is precisely the situation that develops in the work of David Tui with Mila Jovovich in the title role, entitled āThe Perfect Escapeā. Critics' reviews called the thriller "resort". Its IMDb rating is 6.50.
Detective thriller
Director David Thuy is known to the public as the creator of The Chronicles of Riddick and a filmmaker who decided to rework the concept of the classic 60s series called The Fugitive. According to reviews of the movie āPerfect Escape,ā in the 2009 project, he tried to do without familiar outdated stories and fiction. As a result, Tui managed to create a completely classic, rather, detective thriller, shot according to all the laws of film drama, which, incidentally, the characters of the tape more than once argue about.
What a shame ...
Already, according to the established sad tradition, domestic distributors translated the name of the picture extremely carelessly. It seems that the subtitle exists independently, outside the context of the film. Almost all reviewers in reviews of āThe Perfect Escapeā emphasize the fact that there are no shoots in the movie, all the more ideal. Even the phrase "perfect flight" is also not suitable as a translation of the name A Perfect Getaway, although the heroes of the tape ran quite actively towards the finale. One of the meanings of the translation getaway is āshort vacationā or āvacation spotā. Therefore, if you translate the name of the thriller literally, you get āAn ideal short vacationā or āAn ideal place to relax,ā but not āEscapeā.
Plot
āPerfect Escapeā begins with an introduction to the main characters, the newlyweds Cindy and Cliff (Mila Jovovich and Steve Zan), who spend their honeymoon in Hawaii. Their carefree pastime is overshadowed by reports from local media about a pair of murderers hunting for newlyweds, robbing and killing them. Once, on a camping trip, the heroes refuse to give a ride to a couple of hippie hitchhikers, but they meet with other tourists, including Nick and Gina (Timothy Olyphant and Kyle Sanchez), who are married to each other. Due to the alarming atmosphere heated by the ongoing killings, couples begin to suspect each other. But the impending conflict comes to naught when they observe the arrest procedure of those same hitchhikers who had previously been ignored. But who said the police weren't wrong?
The final twist. Caution spoiler!
According to reviews, āPerfect Escapeā (2009) is a prime example of the fact that a successful cliffger gives a stunning effect to the most ordinary stories. Further in the text, you should be more careful, as the entire paragraph is riddled with spoilers. If not for the final turn, the David Tui film could have turned out to be like a mass of the most banal thrillers, which are released a great many annually, but recalling their plot twists and turns is unrealistic only five minutes after the end of the viewing. Cliff and Cindy themselves are the killers, and other couples, including suspicious hitchhikers, are just their victims. Some suffer from the attack of villains, while others who are innocent are punished.
According to all the canons of the genre
The director David Tuiās return from a five-year long vacation was far from the format that the public expected from the creator of The Black Hole and the movie The Riddick Chronicles. At the same time, as movie experts emphasize in reviews of The Ideal Escape, the director turned out to be a worthy specimen that meets the main rules of the thriller genre.
Firstly, the heroes are exposed to mortal danger in peaceful conditions and in non-extreme situations. A honeymoon in the paradise of Hawaii, and serial killers are also in love, like their victims. Secondly, the viewer until the last 15 minutes of timing does not suspect which of the lovers are actually killers. Only after the authors reveal all the cards does the public recall that during the narration there were many hints of true criminals. Of course, all the authorās tricks work if the audience did not watch āSevenā or āPsychoā. Fans of the genre may suspect something was wrong before the final twist.
Undoubted advantage
In addition to the key plot intrigue of āThe Perfect Escapeā, the audienceās reviews include the ingeniously shot action that accompanies the denouement with the advantages of the project. Such energy and dynamism in the paintings of this genre was not, perhaps, about ten years. The inexorable driving pursuit of the tropical jungle, shooting, melee scenes using cold weapons are like a real charge of energy among the depressing monotony of modern, mostly psychological thrillers and even horror films. "Perfect Escape" reviews for the inexorable action received extremely positive.
Acting Ensemble
Thriller, in which throughout the entire timing on the screen there are only 6 characters, bright, exemplary acting works are extremely necessary. And the āPerfect Escapeā actors boasts.
All scenario flaws are forgiven at one glance at the beautiful Mila Jovovich. In The Perfect Escape, the actress did not show anything radically new and hitherto unprecedented, but itās still nice to watch the manifestation of her dramatic talent. Well, in the action scenes Jovovich is absolutely incomparable.
Steve Zan, who became famous after the premiere of the action movie "Sahara", where he was picked up by lead actor Matthew McConaughey, in "The Perfect Escape" surprised many. Firstly, he had a complex image, with the transformations of which the actor coped without difficulty. Secondly, the performer has clearly grown, for example, in comparison with the same "National Security", where Zan's character is horribly inaudible.
Second pair
At the same time, according to the unanimous opinion of cinema experts, the second pair of performers, Timothy Olyphant and Kayla Sanchez, look much more advantageous in the main acting four involved in the film.
Timothy Olyphant disappointed many moviegoers after participating in the filming of "Hitman", but the actor managed to rehabilitate himself in the thriller Tui. Of course, individual viewers still perceived the performer as an agent, albeit unshaven. Nevertheless, Nickās character is quite bright, ambiguous phrases saturated with irony and charisma often sound from his lips.
The best known for her role as Nikki Fernandez in the television series Lost, actress Kyle Sanchez was not inferior to the skill of reincarnation of her on-screen partner. Together, the performers presented the audience with a curious acting duet.
In general, the thriller of David Tui turned out to be a worthy film that will surely appeal to all lovers of unpredictable endings. However, there is a small recommendation for those who did not have time to familiarize themselves with this masterpiece. You should not review something older and really creepy before watching Ideal Escape, otherwise you will not be able to get great pleasure from Tuiās masterpiece.
