Glossitis is an inflammatory process in the tissue structures of the tongue, changing its color and structure. Pathology is characterized by increased salivation, pain when chewing and swallowing food, loss of taste and difficulty in speaking. Symptoms of glossitis are also manifested in hyperemia, swelling, burning of the tongue. The appearance of the main signs of the disease entails a feeling of discomfort. In this case, phlegmon may form on the neck.
The cause of glossitis is a bacterial or viral microflora. The resulting pathology can develop as an independent ailment, and can serve as a sign of a systemic disease.
Symptoms of glossitis, which appear at its initial stage, are a burning sensation in the mouth, a foreign body, and discomfort. At the next stage, the state of the language changes. It acquires a burgundy or bright red color and slightly swells. As the pathology develops, the taste sensations may become dull or completely lost. Increased swelling causes
increased salivation.Symptoms of glossitis in the later stages are a painful and difficult meal. Significant swelling of the tongue causes slurred speech of patients. At the first sign of pathology, it requires immediate treatment. Otherwise, the disease becomes chronic. Symptoms of glossitis in this case are manifested by dense and persistent swelling with a change in the structure of tissues. With a very neglected form of the disease, mushroom-like growths can form on the tongue.
If pathogenic microflora has caused glossitis to occur, the symptoms (photo you see below) primarily appear as foci of acute inflammation and swelling of the tongue. They are accompanied by fever and pain in the mouth. The treatment of this pathology is primarily aimed at eliminating the pathogen of infection.

In the case when viruses became the cause of glossitis, the symptoms and treatment of the pathology are somewhat different from the previous case. Signs of the disease are vesicles that occur on the surface of the tongue. At autopsy, these neoplasms leave erosion, which is very painful. The specialist in this type of glossitis prescribes the necessary drugs that can eliminate the cause of the disease - a pathogenic virus. In case of painful erosion, applications with the drug “Iruksol” are used. Recommended gel or jelly-like products, which include solcoseryl. They help to accelerate the process of tissue structure regeneration. In the event that the appropriate course of therapy is not started in a timely manner, the pathological process can spread to the oral mucosa.
A symptom of advanced glossitis is the occurrence of an abscess. In this case, a pulsating acute pain occurs in the oral cavity. Another sign of advanced pathology is an uneven increase in the tongue, which becomes the cause of slurred speech.
If glossitis is complicated by phlegmon, then swelling and the focus of purulent tissue damage move to the bottom of the oral cavity and to the neck. In this case, pain is pronounced quite clearly.
Difficulty breathing. Often there are
attacks of suffocation. Symptoms of glossitis complicated by phlegmon are expressed in the general weakness of the patient, an increase in lymph nodes and an increase in temperature.
