The Opera and Ballet Theater (Dnepropetrovsk) is the pride of the city. Great artists work here. The repertoire includes operas, operettas, musicals, classical and modern ballets, and musical and choreographic performances.
Theater History
The Opera and Ballet Theater in Dnepropetrovsk was founded in the first third of the 20th century. The troupe was formed by talented people - director Mark Litvinenko, choirmaster Vasily Kiyose, conductor Pyotr Varivoda and choreographer Lyudmila Voskresenskaya. Artists, to get into the Dnepropetrovsk theater, passed a tough selection. The troupe was based on graduates of choreographic schools and conservatories from different cities of the USSR.
The repertoire of the opera and ballet theater in Dnepropetrovsk has always been distinguished by a mixture of classics and modernity, concern for traditions and a willingness to experiment. In the first decades of its existence, the stage hosted the performances Don Giovanni, Forest Song, Barber of Seville, Maternal Field, Giselle, Rigoletto, Porgy and Bess, Carmen, etc.
When the war began, the troupe was evacuated to Krasnoyarsk. After its completion, the theater officially ceased to exist.
A new life began in 1974. The theater was revived, once again loved by the audience and kindly criticized. His repertoire was replenished with new productions. His performances receive the highest marks.
In those years, the repertoire included such productions as La Traviata, Bogdan Khmelnitsky, Silva, Don Quixote, Grand Waltz, Madame Butterfly, Troubadour, The Prodigal Son, Zaporozhets for Danube β,β Quiet Don β,β Jester β,β The Nutcracker β,β Gioconda β,β Assel β,β Standard Bearers β,β Romeo and Juliet β,β Returned May β.
After the death of its founders, the theater experienced difficult times. The change of creative leaders was painful. Soon, the era of perestroika began. Theater funding was inadequate. New performances in the repertoire began to appear less and less. In that difficult period, the theater was headed by Yuri Chaika.
In order to survive, the troupe begins to tour Europe. The theater has visited Italy, Bulgaria, Israel, Germany, France and many other countries. Everywhere artists were waiting for success. Today, tours have become an integral part of the creative life of the troupe.
In 2003, the theater was awarded the title of academic.

First musical
Today the theaterβs repertoire includes not only operas, ballets and operettas, but also musicals. The very first and so far the only production of this popular genre was Sorochinskaya Fair. In November 2015, this musical was first presented to the audience and critics by the Opera and Ballet Theater (Dnepropetrovsk). "Fair" is a performance created according to the well-known story of N. V. Gogol. The music for the production was written by Ukrainian composer Alexander Zlotnik. βSorochinka Fairβ is a vivid performance with folk color and interesting characteristic characters. The musical encourages the viewer to re-read the immortal work of Nikolai Vasilyevich.

"Theater Magic"
Every year an exhibition is held for young artists of the city. The Opera and Ballet Theater (Dnepropetrovsk) is its organizer. It is attended by children who study at an art school or study in art studios. The exhibition is called "Theater Magic". Boys and girls should express in their paintings a look at this type of art, impressions of performances. Before the exhibition, a contest is necessarily held at which the most interesting works are selected. These paintings and get the right to be at the exhibition. Authors of the best, according to the jury, receive diplomas. This year, 200 children's paintings were submitted to the competition. Of these, 67 were selected for the exposition. Children from 9 to 17 years old can take part in the exhibition-competition.
