The series "Revolution": reviews, creators, plot

The creators of the American post-apocalyptic science fiction drama television series Eric Kripke, JJ Abrams and the director of the pilot episode John Favreau in 2012 were full of energy, which cannot be said about the world in their project “Revolution”. The show started on NBC on September 17, 2012, and in 2014 the series was closed after two seasons.

Skillful hands don't know boredom

It is extremely difficult to break into modern television, especially if the project is pure drama in a high-concept style, that is, its plot is interesting and attractive, but can be explained in one line. However, the “Revolution” had high chances to replenish the ranks of the most popular TV shows of our time, because it was tried and tested by experienced filmmakers who undertook its creation. The author of the ultra-popular “Supernatural” Eric Kripke and creatively prolific producer JJ Abrams strengthened their ranks by Iron Man director John Favreau, turned into a super-team to create a new television masterpiece - the series “Revolution” (USA).

After the failed Alcatraz, JJ Abrams was eager to rehabilitate himself and make a successful product. With a relatively low rating (IMDb: 6.7), the Revolution television movie was nominated for Sputnik, TV Guide, and won prizes from the winner of the Emmy, BMI TV Music Awards, and Saturn. Nevertheless, among the majority of positive reviews, the series "Revolution" has several skeptical ratings from world film critics and negative reviews from ordinary people.

Blackout American

The events of the series "Revolution" (2012 - 2014) are unfolding in a world in which, 15 years before the beginning of the events described, one of the basic conditions for the existence of human civilization mysteriously disappears - electricity.

After the blackout, the electricity goes out, production stops, planes fall and other modes of transport cease to function, darkness falls to the ground, so people are forced to return to subsistence farming. The way of life is transformed under the orders that prevailed in the Middle Ages. The territory is controlled by detachments of "police", armed with swords, crossbows and knives. By the way, every second reviewer in the reviews of the series "Revolution" is perplexed about the appearance of the "field commanders" leading armed groups. Indeed, all as one heroes, disguised as movie villains, are dressed in long leather cloaks.

hope dies last

But there is an opportunity to restore the system using a chip. Naturally, a real hunt begins for her, which is led by people striving for power. Armed mercenaries kill the genius who invented Ben Matheson’s technology (Tim Gini). But he manages to pass it on to his son, who is captured by his father’s killers. The scientist's daughter Charlie Matheson (Tracy Spiridakos), trying to save her brother, turns for help to her sleeping uncle Miles Matheson (Billy Burke), who turns out to be an excellent strategist and warrior.

For skeptical critics, the factual side of the story raised a lot of questions for the project’s screenwriters. In their reviews of the series "Revolution" they spoke very clearly, emphasizing the almost complete absence of logic. However, the audience did not delve too much into the semantic background, because there are more than enough spectacular action scenes in the project. For most, they compensated for all the stretch, conventions and inconsistencies of the plot.

Chief Antagonist

According to the traditions of the adventure and drama genre, in any story there should be a bright main villain. In Revolution, this is Captain (later Major) Tom Neville. Actor Giancarlo Esposito, formerly known as the performer of the role of drug lord Gustavo Fring from the show "Breaking Bad", in the image of Neville is much more energetic. The commander of the Republic of Monroe in a world steeped in darkness, saw a chance for self-realization. It seems to him that he does justice by doing exceptionally good deeds. According to the performer, he had long dreamed of a similar role. He was eager to star in a western, ride a horse. The creators of the series helped to realize the dream of Giancarlo Esposito.

revolution series

main idea

Some viewers in their reviews of the series "Revolution" called the brainchild of E. Kripke a typical post-apocalyptic depression film. The scriptwriter fundamentally disagrees with this characteristic. He is inclined to compare his work with Star Wars, because it is full of action, tells of hope, the confrontation of good and evil, and its structure resembles D. Campbell's Travels of a Hero. The creators of the project wanted to show the audience what the world would have looked like without electrical appliances, cellular communications and other civilization-dependent benefits of electricity. Initially, the story was actually a long walk through Central America from Chicago to Philadelphia. Everyone can evaluate how much the authors managed to realize their idea by reviewing both seasons of the “Revolution” series.
