Winston Churchill today is considered one of the most popular figures of the XX century, and not only in England, Europe, but around the world. He was at various posts in his country, but the peak of the politician’s fame came in World War II when Churchill was approved as prime minister (2 times between 1940 and 1955). Well, in general, he was interesting as a person. The aforementioned sir was known as versatile in nature. He painted well, wrote works on history, and in 1953 he was even awarded the Nobel Prize (section literature). Winston himself has been surrounded by myths all his life - the most mysterious stories that did not always, at times, correspond to reality. One of these legends was the story that cognac and Churchill are inextricably linked. Was it really so? Let's try to find out in our next article.
What did you drink?
The opinions of researchers are divided. Some historians are inclined to believe that the harsh prime minister drank every single day, and Churchill preferred cognac to all other alcoholic drinks. Others consider this a kind of hoax. After all, it was not the only alcohol that the venerable sir was fond of. He was also known as a connoisseur of whiskey, preferring Scottish brands of quite decent aging. And he himself liked to say: my tastes are not too exquisite, just, I prefer the best, that's all! However, the daughter of an aristocrat claims that her father invented a special “cocktail” for his own use. In a glass of water, a few spoons of whiskey were poured. Well, this is already in old age.
Churchill's favorite cognac
And yet, what grape spirits did Sir prefer? According to one of the many legends surrounding the great man, he drank daily selected and collection brandy “Dvin” (of Armenian origin). This is a ten-year-old blended drink with a strength of about 50 degrees. Where did he come from - Churchill's beloved cognac? They say that in 1945, when Dvin was brought to Yalta, it was first tried by visiting a meeting with Stalin and Roosevelt, the British Prime Minister - a famous connoisseur of all that is beautiful. Cognac "Dvin" was undoubtedly beautiful, and Churchill appreciated this fact. After the meeting, Stalin himself ordered that the English ally be supplied with Armenian alcohol. And “Dvin” became Churchill's favorite cognac (see photo below).
Life saving
So, the venerable sir daily poured into himself a bottle of fifty-degree. But one day he suddenly discovered: the Dvina had lost its former taste and aroma somewhere. He spoke about his observation to Joseph Stalin (by phone). It turned out that Sedrakyan, a specialist who was involved in compiling Churchill's beloved cognac, has already been exiled to places not so distant to Siberia. He was ordered to return, reinstated in the party and conferred the title of Hero of Socialist Labor. And Churchill, as before, began to relish Dvin. In this way, this drink saved human life.
How much did the prime minister drink?
Legend has it that he started the day with a glass of sherry, then he did not part almost the entire waking time with a container containing cognac or whiskey, and he added at least a half-liter bottle per day. But, to some extent, this is a legend, and Winston himself supported it. After all, according to the recollections of the daughter of an aristocrat, he loved to support myths about alcohol drunk in large quantities, but, moreover, he didn’t drink so much. And after 70 years, doctors even recommended that Sir reduce the use of hard liquor. The politician listened to these tips, reduced the volume of alcohol consumed, and lived to be 90 years old.
Cognac called Churchill
This is the Russian brand of our time, which bears the name of the British prime minister during the war with Germany. This drink is developed and produced in Tolyatti (born in 2006). It is blended using French technology. Reviews about Churchill brandy are very positive, because cognac spirits from France are used for its production, the aging of which is at least 5 years.
