The film “The Human Centipede”, reviews of which did not shine with praise or admiration for the skill of the director, did not “shoot” at the box office, although so far everyone has heard it. Hungry for an unusual movie in the horror genre, the people at first did not spread too much about how disgusted the film actually was from an adequate public.
Reviews from critics and spoiled nerves of the audience
Of course, innovations and original moves in art will always be appreciated, but to exploit completely worthless images without even trying to clothe them in some kind of plot is simply not talented.
The film certainly had positive aspects, but on the whole it is impossible to even measure what wave of misunderstanding and disgust the Human Centipede met. The reviews of film critics were also not particularly enthusiastic, although the trailer for the film was very promising. So, is the movie really as disgusting as it is described?
Americans are to blame
The answer to this question will be unequivocal: yes, the Human Centipede is just so disgusting. Reviews of even the most sophisticated lovers of everything strange and unusual (such as “The Green Elephant”) shout that the film does not carry absolutely any artistic value or ideological value, and the acting is equal to the level of the script, which is practically absent. The plot of the film revolves around the hackneyed theme of an unsuccessful trip of two American tourists to evil Germany to evil Germans. Of course, the girls did not bother to even learn superficially German before the trip, because only all people in the world should know English. That is why hapless tourists find themselves in an unpleasant situation caused by their lack of knowledge of the language and local mentality, as well as the lack of basic survival instincts. However, as practice shows, without the naivety and stupidity of the Americans, the development of the plot is simply impossible.
The trouble does not come alone, especially when you are from the USA
In fact, it is difficult to describe what the film "Human Centipede" is about. Reviews seem to hint to us: about nothing. These hapless tourists ended up in an accident and decided to go out to look for help, despite the fact that it began to rain heavily. The accident occurred, of course, in the forest, apparently because the entourage of a real horror movie can only be created there. Young American women did not even for a minute get the idea of waiting for rain in the car; they immediately bravely rushed towards ephemeral salvation into the very thicket of the forest. No wonder that in the forest they found a house with a host of a very unpleasant and even repulsive appearance. The bad impression of a stranger did not stop the girls from taking glasses of water from his hands, in order to then fall without feelings from sleeping pills added to the water. The same plot can be seen in hundreds of such paintings, but it is simply amazing how far the Human Centipede brings it. Reviews about the film most often focus on the intellectual level of the main characters and the complete lack of plot.
Sick fantasy and childhood dreams of a surgeon
The film does not end with anything good, because a happy ending would contradict the principles of the genre. The strange owner of the house turns out to be a real maniac with unhealthy ideas, who is also a surgeon and a lover of conducting experiments in humans. In the cozy laboratory of an old German who has lost her mind, an American is waiting for the Japanese, who knows no words other than curses in their native language. Having gathered the whole company together, the surgeon in broken English tells them that he is going to make a human centipede of them into a fascinating look. The way he was going to do this is not dreamed of by a normal person, even in the worst dream. By stitching the experimental foreigners together, by combining their “backs” with each other's mouths, the rabid surgeon could not find a place for joy when his experiment was successful. At this point, the viewer already understands that viewing the “Human Centipede” could be limited to familiarizing yourself with the trailer.
It could be worse
Despite the cool reception from moviegoers and critics, “Human Centipede 2” soon appeared. Reviews about the film did not improve at all, and it was not even taken into account that the number of people stitched together significantly increased. They say that the second part of the film is even more disgusting than the first, and the plot in it sags even more seriously. Although, it would seem - much worse? But Tom Six knows where, and confidently goes in that direction. Not only that, he liked to exploit the unhealthy idea of a gut common to several people, that he began shooting the film "Human Centipede 3". Reviews of moviegoers who were lucky enough to get acquainted with the first two parts are already pre-filled with forebodings of something completely abnormal. Many believe that something else is simply impossible to squeeze out of this topic, but Tom Six only slyly smirks at it. Who knows, maybe now he will sew residents of a small town to each other, and the inadequate protagonist will become the local mayor.
Corners of madness and mass rejection
The picture of Tom Six is unlikely to be shown in the movies, and the sale of licensed discs is somehow very slow. Perhaps that is why the offended director decided to take revenge on the world by giving him a few more parts of a millipede? Released in 2011, “Human Centipede 2,” reviews of which were even worse than the first, shocked the imagination of modern filmmakers, but not in a revolutionary sense. Tom Sixx did not bring anything new to the cinema, if only because at first glance his original idea drowned in not-so-high-quality scenery and absolutely indecent play of actors. Some moviegoers joke that the actors act in films of this director exclusively for food, and many seriously believe that Six is blackmailing them. There are plenty of fans of eccentric roles in Hollywood, but it is unlikely that any of them would even have thought of reading the “Millipedes” script, not to mention the direct participation in the filming of a dubious picture. So, the film "Human Centipede 2" (reviews of which are very, very unflattering) was initially doomed to failure.
Colorful but crazy villains
Be that as it may, the negative characters in Tom Six get very colorful. Their acting, of course, does not take the picture to a whole new level, but at least it doesn’t make the viewer simply thoughtlessly spit on the film. For example, the villain from the first part justified his act and desire in a strange way to connect people with his love for a dead dog. The actor’s game turned out to be very charismatic, but that is probably why I don’t want to see him anymore in any film. The main villain, who appears in the second part, suffers from a clear mental disorder, and is also a whole walking warehouse of inferiority complexes. Both characters are quite interesting, but the script of the picture still does not allow them to open properly. The viewer villains disgust or even the desire to run away to hell, and this is the best evidence of the level of acting.
Contingent and target audience
It’s hard to say for whom the film “Human Centipede” was shot. Critical reviews tell us that the film was accepted equally badly almost everywhere, completely not paying off at the box office. Fans of all the most unusual and not very healthy can find the very idea of the picture interesting enough, but in order to comprehend it, it is not necessary to watch the whole film. The Human Centipede is disgusted, nauseous, and reluctant to watch pictures of this genre, and after viewing this picture, the Saw franchise seems kind and fluffy.
