A cyst is a formation that has sufficiently elastic walls filled with liquid. A disease like the maxillary sinus cyst is common. The location of this formation and its size are very diverse, and therefore they manifest themselves in different ways.
The sinuses of the nose, including the maxillary sinuses, are lined with a mucous membrane inside, on the surface of which the excretory ducts of the glands that produce the secret open. Sometimes these microscopic holes become clogged for some reason. In this case, fluid production continues, and it presses on the walls of the gland, which gradually expand. After some time, a formation appears in the sinus, which has a spherical shape and is called a cyst. A feature in the structure of the anastomosis of the maxillary sinus can contribute to the appearance of education. In some cases, the maxillary sinus cyst is formed as a result of chronic sinusitis and rhinitis. Sometimes the cause of this formation are diseases of the upper teeth.
Quite often it happens that a person has for a long time had a maxillary sinus cyst, with almost no symptoms. In many cases, this formation is detected by accident, mainly during other examinations. In some patients, the cyst manifests itself as a stuffy nose, unpleasant sensations that occur in the upper jaw, secretions of their nasal cavity, which are mucous in nature, with frequent sinusitis. In rare cases, headaches are observed. The manifestation of symptoms is practically independent of the size of the formation, but the place of localization plays a role. Usually a cyst, which is located in the lower part of the sinus, even having large sizes, does not manifest itself. If such a formation, very small, is located on the upper wall, and even more so in the area where the trigeminal nerve passes, then severe headaches occur.
If the ENT doctor, based on the patient's complaints and anamnesis, suspects that there is a maxillary sinus cyst, he may suggest a puncture. This should not be scared. Otolaryngologists carry out such manipulations quite often and they have no complications. If the presence of a liquid that is yellowish is detected, then this indicates the correctness of the doctor's assumptions. Then it is necessary to determine the location of the detected cyst. To do this, an X-ray examination of the sinus is prescribed. But the best result is given by computed tomography, which is performed in two projections. Using this method of research, it is possible to accurately determine the size of the cyst and its location. It is very important to know in order to choose the most suitable method for its removal.
The maxillary sinus cyst in itself does not pose a particular danger to human health. And if she does not bother, then treating her is not necessary. However, examinations should be periodically carried out in order to take the necessary measures in time in case of changes. With a disease such as a maxillary sinus cyst, treatment is prescribed exclusively surgical. This formation is in close proximity to the brain and if the doctor recommends surgery, you should not refuse. The most gentle method for cyst removal in the maxillary sinus is endoscopic. No external incisions are made. Removal is carried out through the nose and sinus drainage hole. The surgeon controls the entire process using modern optics, observing everything that happens on the monitor. There are almost no complications after such an operation. But in some cases, this method of removal is not suitable. Then make a small hole under the upper lip, through which removal will be carried out.
