Fatal dose of alcohol: what is it?

Currently, almost all adults drink alcohol. And the love of alcohol among teens is also not uncommon. Someone thinks that drinking will look older and “cooler”, someone in such a simple way seeks to ward off mental pain, drown out loneliness, depression and fatigue.

Some people use alcoholic beverages as a medicine: for example, mulled wine, or grog (hot wine with spices, often diluted) helps with colds, red wine helps relieve spasms and dilate blood vessels. But alcohol can be useful only in small doses.

Lethal dose of alcohol
More often, one may encounter excessive, excessive alcohol consumption. Everyone knows that this will not lead to anything good: degradation, loss of work, mental retardation, quarrels with loved ones - this is it, the lot of drunkards. But not everyone understands how insignificant a lethal dose of alcohol (pure) is and how easy it is to drown yourself to death, even if you drink quality drinks.

Yes, contrary to popular belief, you can poison yourself not only with low-quality vodka, but also with expensive cognac. And for this it’s not at all necessary to drink a lot: the lethal dose of alcohol for a person varies from 2 (for weak people) to 7 ppm, which can be equated to 300-1050 grams of vodka or another drink of the same strength.

However, the foregoing does not mean at all that a person who drank a liter of vodka will certainly die. In fact, his condition will depend on several factors. So, if the aforementioned liter was not drunk immediately, but within a few hours, then the consequences will not be so deplorable - the liver will have time to process part of the alcohol.

Lethal dose of alcohol for humans
By the way, a case is known when a man brought down by a car was delivered to the hospital, in the blood of which doctors found more than 9 ppm of alcohol. What is most surprising - this man survived. This means that his lethal dose of alcohol is much higher than that of the average person.

In addition to the time for which alcohol is drunk, its effect also depends on the availability of a snack, the health and age of the drinker, his personal resistance to alcohol. Of course, in the vast majority of cases, adults get intoxicated much more slowly than adolescents. But if you give the same dose to a frequently drinking teenager and a man who drinks alcohol for the first time in his life, then the latter, of course, will get intoxicated much more.

But back to our ppm - units that measure the lethal dose of alcohol in the blood. It should immediately be noted that, using a ppm, you can measure not only a lethal dose and not only alcohol. This is one thousandth - how many ppm, so much and a gram of substance per liter of blood.

A lethal dose of blood alcohol
So, as mentioned above, the lethal dose of alcohol for an average adult is from 2 to 7 ppm, which is equal to 300 to 1000 grams of vodka or from 1 to 3.5 liters of medium-strength wine. But what is this dose for children?

With children, everything is much more complicated, since the child has not only less weight, but also less stability than an adult. The child’s liver removes alcohol at a slower rate, and his brain and heart are much weaker. Therefore, the lethal dose of alcohol for a child weighing about 20 kilograms can be less than 0.4 ppm, which is approximately equal to 30 grams of vodka, and the infant can die by eating milk from the mother who drank alcohol.
