A corpus luteum cyst of the ovary: treatment, symptoms, risks

It is logical to assume that before describing what is the cyst of the corpus luteum of the ovary, the treatment of this problem, its symptoms, it is necessary to tell what, in fact, is the corpus luteum of the ovary. Unfortunately, not all women know this either, which is very unfortunate.

The corpus luteum is a temporary gland that forms in the body of a woman immediately after ovulation. A corpus luteum develops from a torn follicle. The function of this organ is to produce progesterone, which is necessary, firstly, to maintain pregnancy, and secondly, to block the development of new eggs, which is also necessary for the proper development of the fetus.

It is under the influence of progesterone that the endometrium thickens, into which, subsequently, a fertilized egg is implanted. After the introduction of the egg, the corpus luteum lives for about 4 more months until the development of the placenta, which continues to produce progesterone, ends.

If pregnancy does not occur, the corpus luteum dissolves much earlier, it is as a result of its decay that menstruation begins.

Now you can start talking about the cyst. As a result of the accumulation of fluid in the place where the follicle bursts, this fluid enters the corpus luteum. And so the cyst of the corpus luteum of the ovary is obtained. The treatment of this condition is not a busy task, in some cases it resolves itself. In others, women are prescribed drugs that should normalize hormones in the body. After this, the cyst resolves in a few months. To monitor the process, you must regularly do an ultrasound.

A cyst is diagnosed most often during an ultrasound scan. And it proceeds almost always asymptomatically. Perhaps a pulling sensation in the ovaries, sometimes a delay in the menstrual cycle. However, a pregnancy test yields a negative result.

A cyst does not pose a health hazard, unless it is large enough. Then a rupture of the corpus luteum cyst is possible, as a result of which internal bleeding begins, and this already threatens not only the health, but also the woman's life. A characteristic symptom of rupture of a cyst is acute pain in the right or left part of the abdomen, depending on which ovary the cyst is located, dizziness, and loss of consciousness is possible. And the cause may be a drop, a blow or just a strong stress.

It is because of the risk of rupture that it is very important to constantly monitor the condition of the cyst, the dynamics of changes in the tumor. Was an enlarged cyst of the corpus luteum of the ovary detected? Treatment must be started urgently. Surgery may be required. In most cases, laparoscopy is done to remove the cysts: a few small punctures through which special tools and a camera are inserted. Sometimes during the operation it turns out that this is not enough and you have to do a laparotomy. Sometimes the doctor may decide to remove the affected ovary, but most often this is not required.

In general, the operation process largely depends on the exact diagnosis, the state of health of the woman, her plans for childbirth, and so on.

Laparoscopy is a relatively simple operation, and in case of a successful outcome, with minimal loss of blood, after 3-4 days the woman is allowed to go home. In addition, there is no need to follow a strict diet, as with abdominal surgery.

A separate topic for discussion is the corpus luteum cyst and pregnancy. Most likely, a pregnant woman, having learned that she has a cyst, quite naturally, will panic. However, there is nothing to fear. The fact is that the cyst of the corpus luteum does not completely prevent the development of pregnancy. In addition, she takes on all the functions of the corpus luteum, and continues to produce progesterone. The only thing worth paying attention to is that a pregnant woman with a cyst needs to move less, not lift weights and take care of herself. However, caution must be observed in any case.

That's all that can be said about such a phenomenon as a cyst of the corpus luteum of the ovary. Treatment is not a problem, difficult cases are rare, but diagnosing a cyst is quite difficult.
