Composition in the visual arts: basic laws

The word "composition" comes from the Latin "compositio", which means linking or compilation. Simply put, composition is a way of constructing a picture, determining its perception by the viewer. Any work of art has a certain structure corresponding to its plot.

Composition in painting in terms of technology is not an exact concept, since each school of the past had its own methods and rules for constructing paintings. However, if we analyze the entire field of world fine art, we can identify some objective, universal patterns that underlie any creativity. They in no way depend on the individualities of individual artists, trends and schools. They will be most correctly called the laws of composition.

Ideological

Composition in the visual arts is, first of all, the focus of the ideological principle. Not a single drawing, whether it is a still life or even a portrait and landscape, is a “photographic” copy of a model. Selecting various details and deciding how to place them on the canvas, the artist seeks primarily to reflect his own, individual attitude to the chosen plot, his own understanding.

Simply put, composition in the visual arts contributes to the expression of what interested the painter in the model, and why he decided to portray it. Without this, the picture will become just craft copying, no more. Therefore, the presence of a creative, ideological design when writing is difficult to overestimate.

In order to create real, “living” paintings, having an idea of what composition in fine art is purely technical, an artist must also have a warm heart, mind and be able to think independently and deeply. Simply put, the ideological picture is not so much in its theme as in the artist’s attitude towards her and even to life as a whole.

Analysis and intuition

Any artwork requires the master to have intuition and the ability to analyze. Composition in the art of painting, its format, means of execution and motive should be established by him only in the process of an intuitive movement from content to form. In addition, only having managed to analyze the work created in this way, the painter can make it finished. Moreover, only a check can be considered fruitful, causing a rise in feelings in the master, inspiring him, able to move to an excited and accurate completion of things. Thus, art, beginning, perceived and ending with feeling, can only be explained using detailed analysis.

Wholeness

Identity, analysis and intuition are the fundamental principles that distinguish composition in the visual arts. However, almost the first law can be considered the integrity of the final product. All elements must be in a certain relationship. Neither color nor form can exist separately from each other. A serious picture can be written only by discovering the principle of the structure of the motive, its “compositional scheme”, the harmony of the structure created by nature.

All artists go to the goal of writing analyzed, holistic and complete stories in different ways. The main thing in this is the presence of abilities and the desire to develop them.
