Fusafungin: what is it
This antibiotic was isolated from one species of fungus with bactericidal properties. Fusafungin is used only locally. It is mainly available in the form of aerosols for irrigation of the oral cavity, throat and nose. This antibiotic is effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and even against fungi that are parasitic in the human body. Moreover, microorganisms cannot develop resistance to it. The drug penetrates only into the respiratory system when inhaled, but does not enter the bloodstream. Fusafungin particles settle on the mucosa, which increases its effectiveness.
Drug action
When applied topically, fusafungin remains on the mucosa and has the following effect:
- Relieves inflammation.
- Reduces swelling and mucus secretion.
- Improves nasal breathing.
- Enhances local immunity.
