Making a really good comedy picture is incredibly difficult. First you need to consider the target audience, its age and preferences, the influence of sub- and pop cultures. To this should also be added the need to enter a certain context, and not try to create a whole movie without a plot with only sketches.
Perhaps of all genres, comedies are the most moody. However, this does not mean at all that among these films there are no truly outstanding paintings. The best comedies of all time are films that have been relevant and will remain so for a very long time.
Why is it so hard to choose?
Any rating is built on subjective principles. Whether it is the opinion of film critics or the amount of box office, in any case, the commitment to a tape is expressed in the personal attitude of the viewer. Therefore, to establish a particular film on a specific position and at the same time to please absolutely everyone is impossible. The list below is just one version of the top comedies of all time. The choice of this or that applicant is made on the basis of audience sympathies or the general reaction to the picture from the side of society, the rating does not have clear positioning.
"The Great Dictator"
The genius of Charlie Chaplin is difficult to overestimate. This actor set the tone for a whole generation of followers, and the scenes with his participation literally tore the audience, so any, even innocent joke turned into a real extravaganza of emotions.
"The Great Dictator" is an example of how a brilliant comedian manages to beat and nullify the whole dark pomp of the plot. Where no one was allowed to shoot, Chaplin simply acted and turned one of Europe’s most terrible threats into a funny, and therefore closer and more understandable character.
The picture belongs to the subgenre of tragicomedy. She saw the light in 1940. At the center of the story is a fictional dictator and a Jewish hairdresser, which, by coincidence, is very similar to a leader. The very fact that someone dared to ridicule Hitler (and the character of Chaplin was called differently, but was poured by the Fuhrer) is already amazing. All jokes are extremely sharp, but not evil. The picture looks great even now, after all, this is Chaplin's first fully sound film.
"Big Lebowski"
The best comedies of all time are created by people, actors and screenwriters. Their battlefield is not among the scenery, but in the hearts of the audience. Therefore, "Big Lebowski", which was born in 1998, became one of the most popular films at that time. Until the beginning of the 21st century, the picture hardly had competitors in the genre. The Cohen brothers managed to create a stunningly simple, but at the same time exciting film with an abundance of subtle humor and satirical retreats.
Jeff Bridges played the role of "Dude" and, apparently, this became his largest role. In addition, the cast also includes John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi. These actors managed to show a seemingly absolutely meaningless scene in real life with such charisma that the picture remains in the top of the best comedies of all times and peoples so far.
Ace Ventura: Pet Tracing
Between the film, in which the play of the actors seems as far-fetched and false, and the picture that is still remembered with warmth, there is one person - Jim Carrey. In 1993, the picture “Ace Ventura: Searching for Pets” was released, and the hero, whose facial expressions literally blew up the hall, forever became one of the best comedians in cinema.
Despite its popularity, it was subsequently extremely difficult for the actor to move away from the chosen role. Which, however, in no way directly affected the quality of the tape. Judging by the reviews, the film is really good, and those vulgar jokes that are still in the picture are very appropriate.
The Naked Gun
The first picture was released in 1988. Director David Zucker approved the main role of Leslie Nielsen, who until then was already known as a comedian. The tape turned out to be extremely saturated with various jokes, meaningless dialogues, seasoned with the awkwardness of the protagonist.
"Naked Gun" is an action movie that was wrapped in a comedy wrapper, after which it was presented to the viewer as a surprise. Judging by the reviews, the first two parts of the trilogy are especially popular. It is also worth noting that the role in this film is considered the most successful among Leslie Nielsen.
"The Diamond Arm"
The 100 best comedies of all time include several works by Gaidai. But in this case, it is worth considering one of the most beloved paintings of the Russian audience - “The Diamond Arm” of 1968. Of course, one cannot minimize the influence of the genius Nikulin on the success of the film, but the work of the directors, the scenery of the picture, as well as the coverage of the narrative should also be noted.
The best comedies of all time are not required to be modest and bland, "The Diamond Arm" has proven this. It is impossible not to mention the work of Papanov and Mironov, who managed to create a duet of the most charismatic villains in the history of cinema.
At the same time, critics met the tape very ambiguously. For example, there were comments that Nikulin could play sharper. Despite this, as well as a number of some points that censorship could fall into, the picture turned out great, and it looks easy even today.
"Only girls in jazz"
Billy Wilder's musical comedy set the bar for a long time, through which so far no single film of a similar orientation has been able to go through. Given some conservatism, characteristic even of the liberal USA of the 50s, such a tape was a real public challenge. It should be noted that the experiment was successful, since the film remains one of the most popular in the director’s portfolio. The picture was published in 1969, after which it was immediately condemned by both critics and representatives of state censorship.
Despite this, the film with a sexual connotation still came out for rent, after which it forever secured its place among the best comedies of all time. The main roles were played by Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. The brilliant Marilyn Monroe only added a rating to the tape.
"Alone at home"
This is the same film that everyone knows on television on New Year's Eve. The picture turned out to be so original that so far, not counting the failed sequels, it has no serious continuation or competitor.
The film was released in 1990 as an easy comedy for the whole family. The main role went to a stunningly charismatic child - Macaulay Kalkin. She still remains his only successful project. The viewer liked the first film so much that the director almost immediately decided to shoot the next part. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern played the roles of not so successful, but terribly funny robbers. The painting is still dearly loved by both adults and children.
Signor Robinson
Comedy films of all times and peoples simply cannot form a rating without Paolo Villaggio. This is a terrific comedian from Italy, familiar to many by the role of a loser-worker, who is called on the carpet by his boss, a terrifying tyrant who owns an entire aquarium with accounting staff.
Signor Robinson, like Forrest Gump, is a one-man show. But if the last picture is more likely to cause tears and tenderness, then the work of Sergio Corbucci was created with the sole purpose of permanently depriving the viewer of any bad mood. Don Villaggio is simply magnificent in its immediacy and simplicity, it is a pleasure to watch his game.
Groundhog Day
In 1993, a unique picture was released with Bill Murray in the title role - Groundhog Day. At that time, the actor was already known for his comedic role and was beloved by the audience. Together with the original plot and the amazing realization of the idea, this brought success and general respect to the picture and its director Harold Ramis. From the perspective of the viewer, Groundhog Day is a stunningly light film with a quick narrative and a peculiar game of the protagonist.
The top 10 comedies of all time include Murray’s other work, but it’s this image that has stayed with him forever, however, just like Peter from Ghostbusters.
"Ghostbusters"
The picture was released in 1984 as a kind of pen test with a completely original plot and attempts to create fabulous scenery. The cast includes: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Harold Ramis. The quartet was so played that no one else could repeat the success of the original picture. The tape and characters formed the basis of numerous comics, cartoons, forming a whole new franchise, which honors the work of the director.
