The tragicomedy film, which became the directorial debut of the independent cinema star Greta Gerwig, made a real sensation in the modern film industry. And the sensation was not only that the debut project was nominated for an Oscar on five points, but also that the indie icon is a representative of the creative environment that the American Film Academy openly ignores. All viewers are strongly encouraged to watch Lady Bird in good quality, as all copyrighted artwork may fade due to broadcast or recording problems.
Autobiographical story
The film "Lady Bird", according to most critics, has an autobiographical plot. Herving is known to the public as a character actress, a clowness in the image of a disaster girl who writes images for herself and plays the chosen roles. Therefore, it is not surprising that the heroine of her tragicomedy was born, like Greta, in the California town of Sacramento, studied at a Catholic school. Perhaps Gerving herself could play a major role in her project, but she was already 34, and Lady Bird in the film was 17, so it was not the screenwriter who embodied it on the screen, but Sersha Ronan. The actress began acting in films from less than nine years old, now by the age of 23 she has become one of the constantly developing Hollywood stars, although she is still quite organic in the image of teenagers.
Plot
The narrative of the picture takes the viewer in 2002 to the Sacramento, flooded by the California sun. The main character is a lively young girl with pink hair, Christine MacPherson (Sersha Ronan), studying at a Catholic school, dares to make fun of nuns, wants her to be called “Lady Bird”, and falls in love with reading enthusiast Kyle Shable (Timothy Chalamet from “Call me by your name”). Since the girl cannot find a common language with her mother-doctor Marion MacPherson (Lori Metcuff from The Big Bang Theory), she dreams of leaving her native backwoods as soon as possible, moving to New York. As a result, she will succeed in leaving, but first she will pass the test of first love, the stage of the school scene, the first serious disappointment in friendship and the insight that she can’t bring order to the whole world.
"Non-academic" movie
Film experts are inclined to position the tape as a prequel to “Sweet Frances” with “Madame America”, to which Herwig wrote the scripts and in which she played the main roles. In the new project, Greta does not list her autobiographical facts, she demonstrates moods, worldly skills, emotions and thoughts. To top it off, the film achieves the highest level thanks to professional acting, light sadness on the verge of elegia pervading every episode, unique directing that does not let the audience get bored. At the same time, Lady Bird cannot be called knocking down. There are no negative characters in the movie, all conflict situations and disputes turn into humor and jokes or condescend to moments of light sadness, for example, the scene of Christine parting with Danny or reading letters. The picture is like a warm blanket that warms, gives comfort and peace, despite the raging weather outside the window. But this effect deprives those who look of anxiety for the future of the characters, it immediately becomes clear that they will be fine.
Solid virtues
Among the advantages of the painting “Lady Bird” are actors selected by Herwig herself. The trump card of the director is considered to be the undeniable talent and immeasurable charm of Sersha Ronan. Of course, Laurie Metcalfe impresses with his skill , he is not inferior to the two beautiful actresses in the constellation of young talents - from Lucas Hedges to Timothy Chalamet. The entire ensemble of the film, according to the requirements of the director, had to repeatedly review her school albums, photographs of her youth, get acquainted with the work of Joan Didion and go on a tour of Hervig's hometown. Greta's efforts have borne fruit, the tape turned out to be a rich sincere personal sympathy of the film crew and the author for the California outback. The warm, sunny project deservedly has an IMDb rating of 7.50. However, this is not a film that can radically change the idea of a new generation, adolescents and youth, show from another angle the eternal problem of fathers and children, the ups and downs of youthful love and growing up in general. “Lady Bird” is a competent, attractive motion picture, but no more.
