Marina is not only a feminine name. This is also a direction in landscape painting, which independently stood out in Holland at the beginning of the 17th century (from the Italian word "marine") and still exists in art. And a marine painter is, accordingly, an artist who paints canvases of a similar, marine, content. Moreover, they can be depicted as directly a seascape, or a scene of a sea battle or other event taking place at sea.
Meaning of the word marinist
Mariniste (fr.) - the so-called landscape painters, painting marinas. In France, there is even the title of artist Morflot, which is assigned to the outstanding "mariners." It can be awarded to photographers, sculptors, and engravers. Many 17th-century artists were essentially marinists. For example, a marine painter is the well-known Rembrandt Vann Rhine, one of the paintings of which is called “Christ during a storm on the Sea of Galilee” (1633). Some of the more modern painters are also at least partially marinists.
The most famous marinists
- In England, the most famous marine painter is William Turner (1775-1851). His paintings such as “The Last Voyage of the Valiant Ship” or “Sunrise with Sea Monsters” in a typical manner for the painter reflect marine - real and imaginary, fantastic - landscapes.
- In France, one can note the work of Philibert (Zim), who created his works in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- In Japan, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849).
Ivan Aivazovsky (1817-1900)
In general, it must be said, the sea and the ocean have always attracted many artists from different countries with their grandeur and simplicity. No exception - Russian art. The great Russian marine painter is Ivan Aivazovsky (Hovhannes Aivazyan). He painted seascapes and battle painting. Even he participated in hostilities, observing sea battles, as if from the inside. His paintings were acquired by courtiers and kings. Among his friends are Bryullov and Glinka. One of the titles he received was the painter of the General Staff of the Russian Navy. His career was very successful. The paintings sold well and almost always brought the artist-marine painter popularity. And all of them on the marine theme were written about 6000!
Heritage
In Feodosia, the painter opens an art school, which later becomes one of the cultural centers of the Crimean peninsula. The last picture, painted by him at the age of 82, is “Sea Bay”. Another one remained unfinished. The most famous is the Ninth Wave. According to his will, the entire gallery of marine paintings was donated to the city of Feodosia.
