To the question of what Dostoevsky wrote, almost every student will call the novel Crime and Punishment. High school students will probably remember the books The Brothers Karamazov and The Idiot.
Unfortunately, not many people know that Dostoevsky Fyodor Mikhailovich wrote not only the “Great Five-Book Book”. But in the bibliography of the great Russian writer there are many wonderful stories and short stories. Though not possessing such a deep philosophical meaning as the famous novel.
The most famous works
What did Dostoevsky write? His most famous book is the novel Crime and Punishment. The "Great Pentateuch" also includes the "Idiot." This novel was written two years after the publication of the book about the unfortunate killer Raskolnikov. The writer took only a year to create “Demons”. Four years later, the Teenager was released. And finally, in 1880, the book The Brothers Karamazov was published.
Before creating his great novels, what did Dostoevsky write ? The works, the list of which is presented below, suggests that not much is known to the work of one of the best authors of the nineteenth century. Few have heard of these stories. And even less - they read them. But we'll talk about works of little prose later. First, it’s worth saying a few words about the novels included in the so-called “Great Five Books”.
"Crime and Punishment"
The novel was written in 1866. By that time, Dostoevsky had time to go to hard labor, to hear the death sentence read out, but a few minutes later, was canceled. In conclusion, the writer got acquainted with the type of people, the existence of which he previously only knew. Everything experienced was reflected in creativity. Raskolnikov is a prototype of political prisoners whom he met in hard labor.
Dostoevsky began to write a story. But the novel came out. As befits a genius writer, Fyodor Mikhailovich burned several options that he did not like. But unlike his colleague Gogol, he was able to bring what he started to the end. In the first version, the narration was conducted in the first person. There was no Marmeladov in him, and the main character was called differently.
In 1866, the editor-in-chief of Russky Vestnik finally learned about what Dostoevsky had written. The works created by the writer before, differed significantly from the book about a student who had hacked an old woman. The novel was published in a literary magazine in the same year.
"Moron"
For many years, Fedor Dostoevsky did not leave the idea. She was bright, but difficult to implement. The writer dreamed of creating a book about a truly beautiful man. About who is so bright in soul that others sometimes take him for an idiot. The idea was difficult to implement. But Dostoevsky succeeded. While abroad, he wrote, perhaps, the deepest and most complex of his book. Prince Myshkin, by the way, was a favorite character of the writer.
Then the novels “Demons” and “Teenager” were written. The writer's dying glory reached its climax after the publication of the book The Brothers Karamazov.
Other novels
So, what did Dostoevsky write besides the above books? Twenty years before the publication of Crime and Punishment, a novel was published that many have heard of. Even those who are not fans of Dostoevsky ’s work. This book is called Poor People. The work is a correspondence of the main characters - Makar Devushkin and Varvara Novoselova. The idea of the novel is the complexity of the existence of people with low social and financial status. However, this topic is covered in most of the novels of the writer. For example, in his subsequent book, “Humiliated and Offended.”
The novel "The Player" Dostoevsky devoted psychological dependence on gambling, with which he himself suffered.
Other books
Another work on the topic of "humiliated and offended" is the story "Netochka Nezvanova." The book deals with the fate of a girl from a poor family. At the beginning of the story Netochka is just a child. At the end - an adult girl. An important role in the plot of this work is played by her stepfather - a miserable and extremely selfish person.
It is also worth mentioning the autobiographical novel “Notes from the Dead House”. This work is based on impressions of being in hard labor. The author narrates in it primarily not about political prisoners, but about criminals. What does a person become when freedom and will limit him? Is he able to maintain his personality in custody? The author seeks to answer these questions in Notes from the Dead House, a book published in 1960.
What did Dostoevsky write? If a general answer should be given to this question, that is, not to list the works of the writer, but to characterize his work as a whole, then, perhaps, we can say that it is a complex, philosophical prose. But not all of Dostoevsky’s creations are like that. His bibliography also contains light, humorous stories. For example, "Crocodile", "Bad joke." The latter is about an important official embraced by humanistic ideas.
The hero of the story "Bad Joke" once decided that attending the wedding of one of his poor subordinates would be a noble, beautiful act. But in reality it turned out differently. Simple people did not understand the lofty ideas of equality. They just laughed at the official.
