Dr. Watson is watching his strange neighbor. He notes his amazing knowledge in some areas and at the same time ignorance in others. The doctor sees that Sherlock Holmes is very energetic, and sometimes becomes lethargic. Also, sometimes a variety of people come to his neighbor, whom he calls customers. Sometimes detective Lestrage appears in their living room.

Once Dr. Watson reads one article about the method of deduction, and it does not impress him. Sherlock says that he wrote it and explains to surprised John about the method of deduction and also says that he is a detective consultant. And then the messenger brings Holmes a letter.

In a brief summary of "Etudes in crimson tones" it is necessary to note the conversation of the detective with the constable. He also says that this was not done by a German, according to the police, but the participant in this crime simply wanted to confuse the police.

Arriving at John Ransa, Mr. Holmes invites him to tell half-sovereign once again about the events that happened. The constable says that he saw a man who was very drunk coming out of a house in Loriston Gardens. He had a red face that was hidden behind a scarf. Sherlock Holmes told the constable that he was not a drunkard and he missed the clue.

Struck by the intelligence of the detective, Dr. Watson is wondering why this man returned? Sherlock Holmes says that he needed a wedding ring, which was found at the victim. The detective is pleased that he came across such an interesting affair and offers to call him "Etude in crimson tones."

Hope's story

Jefferson Hope agreed to tell a sad story about why he decided to take revenge on Drebber and Stangerson. He said that he had a fatal illness and the detectives allowed him to testify in Holmes’s house. Hope had been watching his enemies for many years, but they were able to elude him.

Finally, he was able to overtake them in London. Hope got a job as a cabman and decided to make two pills: one with poison, the other absolutely harmless. Jefferson decided to give the Mormons a chance and choose the pill themselves. Hope was happy that he could avenge his father and daughter Ferrier.

Jefferson did not live to see the trial, so his testimony was printed in newspapers according to the Scotland Yard detectives.
