Early years

Dream Theater was founded in 1985 by American students - D. Petrucci (guitar), D. Mayang (bass), M. Portnoy (drums). The original rock band was called Majesty. In 1987, the band got its current name, it was proposed by the father of the drummer.

Discography of the group Dream Theater begins in 1989, when the first album When Dream and Day Unite was released. Starting from this work, one can trace the origin of the corporate sound of the collective with a complex construction of compositions. A few years later, the group will become the brightest representative of the progressive metal genre.

Studio albums

The band will release the next record in 1992, this is due to the search for a new vocalist. With the Images and Words album, the team was very successful. The record became gold in the United States of America. She is considered one of the most successful in the Dream Theater discography.

In 1994, the band released Awake, the lyrics and music of which were composed by all Dream Theater members. In the same year, the keyboardist leaves the team. After 14 years, the authoritative online edition of The Metal Archives recognizes this record as the best in Dream Theater discography.

The next full-fledged studio work was the album Falling into Infinity, released in 1997. It turned out to be more commercial due to the pressure of the releasing label.

Two years later, the Dream Theater discography is replenished with the concept album Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory. It is received with a bang not only by fans, but also by music critics. The album is a story in which love, hatred and death are intertwined. The album was a kind of continuation of the song from the second album Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

In 2002, the first double album in the Dream Theater discography was released - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. The first part of the album is devoted to personality problems that are familiar to every person - loss of faith, self-isolation. The second deals with mental health problems, the attitude of society towards those suffering from mental illness.

The very next year, the team released their hardest sounding record - Train of Thought. In 2005, Octavarium saw the light of day, winning first place on the European charts. The musicians of the symphony orchestra participated in his recording.

In 2007, Systematic Chaos released. She was liked by both critics and fans of the team. Systematic Chaos has affected both social and political issues in the world, as well as personal ones. In support of the release, the team went on a world tour, visiting 35 countries during the year. The album entered the top ten popular records according to various national charts and took 19th place out of 200 according to Billboard in 2007.

The tenth anniversary release in Dream Theater's discography was released in 2009. The lyrics of Black Clouds & Silver Linings songs are based on the personal experience and experiences of the band members. This is the last joint recording of the group with drummer M. Portnoy.

In 2011, the disc A Dramatic Turn of Events was released, the lyrics of which are enlightened in the politics of the United States. The traditional progressive metal sound is complemented by broken rhymes and lyrical piano parts. Musical critics found the resemblance of this disc to the second album of the collective.

In 2013, the team released the album Dream Theater, songs for which were partially invented during a world tour in support of the last release.

In 2016, the team delights fans with the double concept album The Astonishing. A guest orchestra and a choir took part in the recording.
